One Adelaide regatta still gets talked about aboard Two Dogs.

Back in 2017, the Two Dogs crew travelled to Adelaide and came home with something bigger than another regatta result: qualification for their first J/24 World Championship.

Years later, it is still one of the events they remember most fondly. It was a milestone earned together by a crew that had already begun building the history it now brings to Melbourne.

For Jack Fullerton, the attraction of the J/24 has never changed. After more than 15 years in the class, he still loves the honesty of one-design racing. The boats are equal. The conditions are shared. What happens next is up to the sailors.

Now Two Dogs gets to race a World Championship on home water. Adelaide was where their first Worlds journey began. Melbourne is the chapter they do not have to travel far to reach.

A SAILING LEGEND WILL OPEN THE WORLDS.

Some opening ceremonies need very little introduction. This one has John Bertrand AO.

The skipper who led Australia II to its historic 1983 America’s Cup victory has been named Patron of the 2026 Epigen J/24 World Championship and will officially open the event at Sandringham Yacht Club on Friday 6 November.

An Olympic bronze medallist, multiple world champion and Legend of Australian Sport, John has spent a lifetime at the sharp end of sailing. It is a privilege to have him welcome the international J/24 community to Melbourne.

The opening ceremony will be held from 6 pm to 9 pm on the SYC Hardstand and Foredeck. We look forward to beginning the championship with one of the defining figures in Australian sailing.

🇩🇪 ROAD TO MELBOURNE: MEET TEAM FAST FORWARD

Fresh from competing at the German Open, Team Fast Forward is preparing for a considerably longer journey: all the way from Germany to Melbourne for the 2026 Epigen J/24 World Championship.
During the German Open, the team received special recognition for representing Germany on the world stage and making the trip to Australia.
They also achieved something surprisingly elusive at a busy regatta: getting the whole crew together for a proper team photo!
We’re looking forward to welcoming Team Fast Forward to Sandringham Yacht Club and seeing them take on Port Phillip Bay this November.

For one afternoon, Melbourne stops.

Before championship racing begins, visiting competitors, families and friends have the chance to join one of Melbourne’s great sporting traditions: Cup Day.

Brighton Beach Hotel, a sponsor of the 2026 Epigen J/24 World Championship, is hosting a Melbourne Cup lunch on Tuesday 3 November from 11:30 am. Expect a great lunch, big screens, race-day style and the atmosphere of the race that stops the nation.

For those visiting Melbourne, this is a chance to experience Cup Day as Melbourne does it. Dress for the occasion and bring the crew.

The event books out, so early bookings are essential. To join the championship group, email committee member Nick Chapman at [email protected].

Nick will coordinate the booking with Brighton Beach Hotel and make sure competitors, families and friends are seated together.

They all saw the keel.

The Poker Face crew still talks about a massive wipeout at the Cronulla Nationals. The seas were big, the boat went a long way over and, as the team puts it, everyone saw the keel.

It is tempting to make the wipeout the whole story. The better detail is what sits beside it. This is a crew that prefers heavy weather, likes sailing downwind in big waves and returns to a simple rule: stick to the plan. Albert Mahoney organises. Amanda Aylward keeps the boat calm. Adam Keyes-Tilley steers while pretending everything is under control.

The memory survives because the crew came through it together and can now tell it on themselves. Melbourne may provide more heavy-air opportunities. The plan, presumably, is to keep the keel slightly less visible.

Bad Moon is a family boat

Bad Moon has been a family boat since 2000.

Kelly Holmes-Moon started the team and raced alongside his son Chris for eight years. He continued racing Bad Moon while living with cancer, taking part in his final race just two weeks before he passed in September 2016. Chris and Joey then inherited the boat and carried the team forward.

David Hayslip raced with Kelly and remains aboard. Sarah Francis and Luke Fricke joined in 2022. The crew says anyone who has raced on Bad Moon is family, whether or not they share a surname.

The team has not missed a Texas J/24 Circuit race since Chris took over as skipper, according to the crew. After four World Championships in North America, Melbourne will be their first beyond the continent.

That is a lot of history to bring to a start line.

We’re glad they’re bringing it to ours.

Fair racing starts long before the first start.

After busy days at work and running their businesses, committee members Hugo and Wazza have been putting in late nights creating the sail templates used during championship measurement.

It’s careful work that draws on their years of knowledge and experience. By helping measure every sail to the same standard, they’re helping give every crew a fair chance when racing begins.

Meet Two Dogs: home Worlds, rum after racing and one rule - just send it.

Some teams come together for one campaign. Most of the Two Dogs crew has already been sailing together for nearly a decade. Nicola Micheletto is the newest addition, joining a group with plenty of shared miles and stories behind them.

Jack Fullerton has raced J/24s for more than 15 years. What keeps him coming back is the class at its simplest: equal boats, close racing and a result decided by what the crew does on the water.

This time, the Worlds is coming to them. When asked why Two Dogs signed up for Melbourne, Jack did not need a long answer: ‘Home Worlds! Can’t say no to that!’

The team motto? ‘Just send it.’
The post-race tradition? Rum.

Their first Worlds beyond North America

Bad Moon has raced at four World Championships. Melbourne will be their first outside North America, and for four of the crew it will be a first visit to Australia.

Sarah Francis is originally from Australia and has lived in the US for 20 years. Her family will be there as shore crew, giving this trip a welcome connection to home. The rest of the team hope to make time to explore as well as race.

They are chartering a boat and keeping their measure of success grounded: a reliable week on the water, a good time together and lessons to take home. As they put it, “to get better you have to sail with the best”. Good food and good company would round out the trip nicely.
