Daily news on the Mighty Bombers for the Red and Black Army

GAME DAY.

I hate Carlton more than any other club.

Hawthorn are a close second. Collingwood round out the big three. But Carlton? They hold a special place in my football hatred.

Their supporters are unbearable to sit near and, yes, before you ask, I’m still not over 1999. I don’t think I ever will be.

But today’s a new day.

The first full week under Solly. The wide open spaces of the MCG. A chance for a few players to remind people what they bring.

I’ve seen plenty of frustration about Cox and Jones being selected, but the reality is we need their running power. Jones was genuinely starting to find his role on the wing before injury struck, and right now we need players who can cover ground and help us spread.

Will today be easy viewing? Maybe not.

Do we need to get out of the blocks quickly? Absolutely.

But for one day, let’s put the negativity aside and get behind the boys.

They’re wearing the sash. They’re representing our club. They deserve our support.

And who knows? Maybe, just maybe, we pull off a surprise.

Go Bombers.

Let’s show them what the Bomber diehards can do.

And for today, keep it positive.

If you want to pile on, there’ll be plenty of time for that after the game.

GO BOMBERS. ✈️🔴⚫

Bomber fans - these two should be at every centre bounce, and it makes me excited!!!

Tomorrow night can’t come quick enough.

A highly-rated rookie. A midfielder entering his prime.

We’ve only seen small glimpses so far, but tomorrow night gives us another look at a combination that could be a big part of Essendon’s future.

I’ll be watching every centre bounce.

Bombers fans, how excited are you to see Robey and Durham together? 🖤❤️

Bomber fans, there are four changes for Sunday night.

Mason Redman returns and will celebrate his 150th AFL game in the red and black.

Harrison Jones is back at AFL level for the first time in 403 days after overcoming a long injury battle.

Hussien El-Achkar has earned a recall on the back of strong VFL form, while Sam Durham returns after missing last week with concussion.

Four welcome inclusions. Which one makes the biggest difference against Carlton? 🔴⚫️

Jordan Ridley is set to return against Carlton on Sunday night after training strongly this week.

My view- If Ridley is planning to leave at season’s end, Essendon should play him whenever he’s fit.

He’s played only two games this year, the team is better with him in it, and the club needs to know exactly where he stands before any trade talks.

If he leaves, Essendon should focus on maximising his value rather than managing him extra cautiously.

Agree or disagree: if Ridley wants out, should Essendon stop being conservative and just play him whenever he’s fit?

Bomber fans, Essendon have reportedly asked the AFL for assistance in the form of a draft pick - As per Cal and the video will show that it plays in to a potentially large draft haul with trades as well

So, do we qualify?

Looking at previous AFL assistance packages, probably not.

North Melbourne received assistance after winning 12 games from 84 matches. That’s a win rate of 14.3%.

West Coast received assistance after winning 11 games from 91 matches. That’s a win rate of 12.1%.

The AFL has generally reserved assistance for clubs stuck in prolonged periods of extreme non-competitiveness.

Now let’s look at Essendon.

Across 2024, 2025 and the opening part of 2026, the Bombers have won around 18 games from 58 matches. That’s roughly a 31% win rate.

On wins and losses alone, Essendon isn’t close to the benchmark set by North Melbourne and West Coast.

That’s the reality.

But there is another layer to the discussion.

Tasmania is about to enter the competition. Expansion clubs don’t arrive empty-handed. They receive draft concessions, list concessions and access to talent that existing clubs don’t get.

Essendon enters that period with no finals win since 2004.

Twenty-two years.

Multiple coaches.

Multiple rebuilds.

Multiple list resets.

And another young list trying to climb its way back up the ladder.

The Bombers may not qualify under the AFL’s traditional assistance criteria, but they are entering one of the biggest list-disruption periods the competition has seen in years.

Which raises a different question.

Should assistance only be available to clubs once they’ve completely bottomed out?

Or should the AFL provide some form of transitional support to rebuilding clubs before Tasmania begins taking talent out of the system?

What do you think Bomber fans?
