𝗞𝘂𝗹𝗶𝗻 𝗡𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗚𝘂𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 (𝗢𝗿𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗱) 𝗦𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗼𝗻 - 𝘼𝙪𝙜𝙪𝙨𝙩

The First Peoples of the Eastern Kulin Nation, including the Traditional Owners of this land, the Wurundjeri woiwurrung people, measure change with an annual cycle of seasons marked by changes in the land, animals, water and sky.

On this land there are seven annual seasons while two non-annual seasons, fire and flood, occur on average, every seven and 28 years.

Today marks the start of the 𝗚𝘂𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 season when the orchids begin flowering and the cold weather is ending. Caterpillars of the common brown butterfly eat grasses at night, silver wattles flower and koalas begin their noisy night-time mating rituals.

It doesn’t arrive with fanfare or policy; it doesn’t need speeches or signatures. It begins with something quieter: a conversation, a shared moment, a willingness to see one another not as strangers but as fellow travellers through the human experience.

In this year’s observance, we’re reminded that real peace is forged not only in negotiation halls or by writing into treaties, but it’s also built, thread by thread, in the trust we extend to one another in daily life.

Planet Ark's National Tree Day started in 1996 and has grown into Australia's largest community tree planting and nature care event.

The Merri-bek Festivals team are currently doing consultation on the future of our local festivals.

Below is a brief breakdown of what is being considered:

*𝗙𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗮𝗹 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗡𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗵 (Fawkner, Glenroy, Pascoe Vale, Oak Park & Hadfield) – a new annual festival hosting a range of activities, over multiple days, at different locations

*𝗦𝘆𝗱𝗻𝗲𝘆 𝗥𝗼𝗮𝗱 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗲𝘁 𝗣𝗮𝗿𝘁𝘆 (Brunswick) – to go biennial alternate year to the Coburg Night Market

*𝗖𝗼𝗯𝘂𝗿𝗴 𝗡𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗸𝗲𝘁 (Coburg) – to go biennial alternate year to the Sydney Road Street Party

*𝗕𝗿𝘂𝗻𝘀𝘄𝗶𝗰𝗸 𝗠𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗰 𝗙𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗮𝗹 (Brunswick) - being refreshed

*𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗼𝗹𝘀 𝗯𝘆 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗟𝗮𝗸𝗲 (Coburg) - no change

𝗠𝗲𝗿𝗿𝗶-𝗯𝗲𝗸 𝗖𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗖𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗹 state the reasons for these changes is due to:

- A disproportion of festival resources across the municipality

- Limited geographic distribution of events

- Limited opportunities for artists

- The effects of climate change and extreme weather on outdoor events

- Increasing costs of production

- Condensed programming and high workload

So they are proposing to make some changes to the bigger festivals in order to redistribute the program more widely across the municipality, and to increase more climate resilience.

It was two big 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗕𝗲𝗲 days at GNH to get our Multipurpose Room ready for transitioning from our Food Relief Program to starting the FREE "𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗧𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲𝘀" Community Lunch.

Thanks to our 𝗦𝘂𝗽𝗲𝗿 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗿 𝗩𝗼𝗹𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗲𝗿𝘀 who showed up to power through the cleaning and moving around of furniture over the two days. I don't think the room has ever been so clean before!

This year's theme "𝟱𝟬 𝗬𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗗𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗹𝘆" marks five decades of NAIDOC Week as an official, community-led movement. It serves as a tribute to the Elders, activists, and communities who built the movement, turning resistance into expression and ensuring that First Nations voices and cultures remain strong, unapologetic, and proud.

NAIDOC has always been more than a week — it’s a platform, a protest, a celebration, and a statement of survival.
