Australia recorded a 27 per cent spike in drowning deaths among people aged 0 to 29 last year, with the sharpest rise in the 15 to 24 age group.

A report from Royal Life Saving Australia found drowning risk surges from age 10 and peaks at 20 - when it is 13 times higher - yet half of 10-year-olds and 40 per cent of 15-year-olds still can’t swim 50 metres.

One in 10 children have never taken swimming lessons, and a third drop out by age nine, leaving teens and young adults exposed to rising dangers in the water.

Experts say the findings highlight an urgent need for ongoing swimming education and targeted water-safety programs throughout adolescence.
