Perth Karate Dojo

Massive congrats to Sean-senpai & Lochie-senpai who both completed their Matsubayashi-ryu grading today! Sean graded to 3rd Dan & Lochie to 2nd Dan! Lots of hard work went into this and great to see the results!!

Congratulations to Sean-san (3rd/Sandan) and Lochie-san (2nd/Nidan) who achieved their next black belt level this weekend. Totalling around 16 hours of training—including an intensive final assessment—over the weekend, both demonstrated a strong display of skill and dedication to Matsubayashiryu. Both practitioners commenced their training at CKD, but now continue in WA at the Perth Karate Dojo.

It’s been a wonderful weekend reconnecting and training together with some of our Kalgoorlie colleagues. Great to see how much Matsubayashi-ryu has expanded!

What began as a transition to Matsubayashiryu at the Kalgoorlie Karate Academy has grown into a strong WA community.

After training in Kalgoorlie with Matt and Susan Edwards sensei, the art expanded to Perth through Hannah sensei's relocation. In parallel, Sean-san and Lochie-san—both originally from our Canberra dojo—had also relocated to Perth and continued their training, helping build a strong foundation at the Perth Karate Dojo.

Today, the WA Yudanshakai has grown into a fantastic group of five black belts—though we’re missing Susan-san from Kalgoorlie in this photo. A great group and wonderful spirit across WA that has come so far!

Kancho Reece is currently in WA at the Perth Karate Dojo. It was wonderful to catch up with with everyone again, including dojo sensei/senpai Hannah san, Sean san, and Lochie san. A pleasure also to train with Stuart san, who practises Shorinryu Kishaba Juku. Great to share Matsubayashiryu!

We're thrilled to be hosting Sensei Reece from Karate Canberra: Kodokan Cummings Karate Dojo in May for an exciting seminar and further exploration into Matsubayashi-ryu. Details in the link attached.

With technology, so many things are made possible! It was great to catch up with Georgina (who's currently in NZ), and Hannah, Sean and Lochie (WA) from the Perth Karate Dojo. Looking forward to catching up with the Perth crew in just over a month.

Another fly in visit from the east coast! Sam & Darcy from Karate Canberra: Kodokan Cummings Karate Dojo joined us today. Was a great class with spatial awareness drills, kata and lots of partner work!!

Bailey [centre] was recently in WA and had the chance to train with Sean-senpai [left, originally from CKD], and Barry at the Perth Karate Dojo. It's wonderful that our karateka can travel and still train!

It’s awesome to be able to continue training even remotely!! Although we have a good group here in Perth, it’s great to continue advanced training to ensure we keep our skills up 🥋

A long day—8 hours—at the dojo training with Yudansha and Yudansha candidates. The day finished up with a virtual training session with our remote members, Sean-san, Hannah-san, and Lochie-san in Perth (3,600kms away for our international followers!), who've all ended up in the same place by good fortunate and have created a Matsubayashiryu study group and the Perth Karate Dojo.

A great finish to 2025 with our end of year dinner. Celebrating the year that was and getting excited for what’s to come. Great to see how we’ve grown!

Classes have wrapped up for now. We’ll be back from Monday 12th January 🥋

It’s been a busy past few weeks at PKD with our instructors’ recent trip over east and our second PKD grading as well!!! Congratulations to all the students who graded. Everyone put in a massive effort and showed much improvement.
