Vale Brien (Meggsy) Merrick Bull #192
It is with heavy hearts we share the passing of one of the Bulls toughest and most successful ever players.
A rugged and uncompromising Front Rower Meggys commenced playing Senior Rugby at “Gods Acre” in 1975, in 2nd Grade starting a long love affair with the game and those he played with,
amassing 194 Club Games during 18 seasons.
Many will tell you they were very thankful they played with Meggsy than against him, so feared by those he played against in and era were the dark arts of the front row and the ruck were not for the faint hearted.
Former teammate Max Young reports, ‘After a game at the Army Camp against Army as he was undoing his boots in the changeroom he was complaining to Jinker about the state of his boots – ‘the lace eyelets were filled with congealed blood and it was hard to undo the laces – it was Army blood and he was blaming them!’
Meggsy’s also offered some very sound advice as a coach to his forwards, when entering a ruck: ‘If it is round and white, pick it up and run hard, if it is round and has hair on it, kick the s@&t out of it’.

Brien was Captain Coach of the Bulls opening Grade Premiership win in the NRU guiding the 1991 ​4th XV to victory in the Newcastle Rugby Competition after the Bulls stepped up from the Hunter Valley in 1990, a great achievement in only their 2nd season in the top tier.
This was the last of one of the 11 Premierships Brien won as a player, making him one on the most successful players in the Clubs History.
Another very proud moment was when the fearsome, uncompromising front rower was named as the Ho**er in the 50th Anniversary Year Team the “Dirty, Filthy, Rotten Scoundrels”.
Very fitting for a very proud Bull.
In his post playing days Brien was a regular at home games and on the road over the years, watching both his sons Tim and Simon pull on the Red and Black for many season.

With sadness we share the passing of one of the “Originals”.
Murray was a foundation member of the club attending the first meeting at the Imperial Hotel on 07/12/1966.
Playing 47 Club Games.
33 1st Grade Games.
14 2nd Grade Games.
From 1967-1971 and in season 1973.
1967 he was awarded 1st Grade Most Consistent Back.
1968 1st Grade Most Consistent Back.
1970 2nd Grade Best and Fairest.
He was the Clubs Inaugural Club Treasurer 1967.
1967 Committee member of the HVRU.
1970 Social Committee.
1971 Club Captain.
1971 2nd Grade Premiership Winner.
Murray Forrester, best known to all and sundry as 'The Moose' was first introduced to Rugby whilst a student at the Scots College Bellevue Hill, Sydney, and so it was inevitable when Rugby was first mooted he was at the forefront when the activities began around Singleton Rugby Club.
It is stated "in the beginning" that Murray was first approached by Bill Rose and others with Ian 'Ike' Dent to get the ball rolling with the formation of Rugby in the Valley.
Singleton staged its initial foundation meeting and Murray was elected our first treasurer and when things took off, Murray soon realised that with his own work load and the constant attention to the club's finance, it was a wise move to seek the help of Peter Dunlop - a position Peter held for the following 32 years.
Murray's participation in all the club's activities made him a very respected and valued member of the Singleton Rugby Club.
He had played Rugby with 'Ike' Dent, Bob (Speedie) Moore and 'Fats' Halter at the Wanderers Rugby Club in Newcastle and was one of the President's advisers with the formation of the club.
The constant get togethers to discuss various avenues to follow with the fundamental coaching when some participants had never seen the game, let alone play it, created many problems and challenges, to say the least. However the right course must have prevailed and the club was up and running.
He won the competition for the Club Logo. His submission of a Bull’s Head was accepted as the Club emblem – The Bull. This legacy of his has outlived him and will remain as part of the club.
He was awarded 3 points as the Best & Fairest Player in the club’s first competition match in 1967 against Muswellbrook.
Murray certainly enjoyed meeting with his former teammates over the years to support the Bulls, proudly supporting his son Scott a hard running centre during the 2000’s. A true gentleman of the Club, Community and the Game.
Our sincerest condolences to Wandella, Emma, Julie, Scott and their families.
The funeral service for Murray will be held at Singleton All Saints Anglican Church at 11:00am Thursday 27th August.
