The Sunday group today were focusing on target areas. This allows the kids to have freedom of choice which allows them to develop their own learning pathways. The technical term for this is called “discovery learning theory” or “inquiry based learning” (problem based learning) as it focuses on the students creating their own answers to the problem therefore allows them to develop creative thinking, independent learning and problem solving skills.

As a coach it’s my job to ensure the kids are having a fun, interactive and engaged time on court. When the kids are smiling just as much as the coach though it just doesn’t seem like a job.

A very strong start to our Sunday squad where we worked on fundamentals while applying discovery learning techniques. This allows the students to develop problem solving skills independently in a constructive environment.

Problem solving activities can be made fun under the right conditions. This is a good example of applying cognitive learning techniques during our junior coaching program. As you can see the kids are having a great time on court and the coach is making sure he doesn’t lose again 😂😎

The Safari Squash School is a new and innovative junior squash program catering to all levels. The main goal of the program is to provide the students with life skills that they can apply in everyday life. We achieve this by creating a squash curriculum that structures learning whereby clear outcomes can be achieved.
The program is both challenging and rewarding by differentiating the learning outcomes to the ability of the student. This way it creates a positive learning environment so the students can benefit the most from the program. The Safari Squash School isn’t designed to turn every player into world number 1, it’s about having fun while being physically active and healthy.
However, for students who thrive and want to achieve a higher level of squash, the school’s progression and assessment outcomes set clear goals for the students to strive towards.

This was my first successful junior program that set the foundation for the Safari Squash School. We’ve had 14 kids signed up running during the Friday 4:30pm session and our new Sunday 9:30am session. I’m excited for what 2020 has to offer and more kids having fun playing squash 👍
