Very sad day today, I could say this was one of the men that put me to where I am today! Rest in peace Reg!
Vale : Mark Regan
The international swimming community mourns the passing of Mark Regan, a visionary and deeply dedicated coach who shaped the landscape of elite swimming across multiple continents.
Mark’s coaching journey was defined by an extraordinary capacity to elevate talent. In his early career, he transformed Western Sydney's Cabramatta Swimming Club into a powerhouse of Australian national swimming. His exceptional tactical mind soon brought him to the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS), where he served as Senior Coach from 1997 before taking the helm as Head Coach from 1998 to 2002.
It was on the deck of the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games that Mark truly cemented his legendary status. Stepping in under intense pressure to coach Petria Thomas, he masterfully guided her through severe shoulder rehabilitation to claim an iconic Olympic silver medal. This momentous achievement earned him Ring Number 44 on the SWIM Coaches & Teachers Australia (SCTA) Honour Board.
His golden touch extended well past Australian borders.
The Danish Renaissance (2002–2008): As Head Coach of Denmark, Mark completely revitalised the nation's swimming program, lifting them from obscurity to an international powerhouse decorated with World and Olympic accolades.
High-Performance Leadership in New Zealand (2010–2013): Taking over as the High-Performance Head Coach for Swimming New Zealand, he orchestrated the rise of Lauren Boyle, propelling her to dual World Short Course Championship medals and a historic 4th-place finish at the 2012 London Olympics.
Mark Regan leaves behind a profound blueprint of elite performance, and a lasting imprint on the sport of swimming worldwide. He will be fiercely missed by his former swimmers, colleagues, and the global sporting community.
