Is Parkour safe?
Is any sport safe?
How do you choose to quantify risk?
More importantly how do you mitigate danger.

Are the things Parkour athletes do even all that special?
We've all been at a jam and seen some tradie in workboots casually hit a jump bigger than the rest of us and then wander off to the servo.

So are the movement inherently impressive... not really.

BUT

A good system, A good coach and a scientific approach all build athletes who can do simple things at extraordinary levels AND more importantly, they can do so safely.

Doing it is one thing. Repeating it for hours without mistakes and being able to make mistakes safely... that's a real athlete.

a.dmitch_ has been training with us at AAPES for most of his life. I've had the pleasure of watching him go from enthusiastic child to phenomenal man.
The best system in the world can't build athletes, ultimately they build themselves.

This bail nearly gave me a heart attack.
This bail proves that Mitchell has done the work.
He has the strength, proprioception, skill and awareness to make a mistake at high risk speeds, high risk power and with almost no space to manoeuvre and still optimise every part of the bail..

Mitch kept training after this slip.
For hours on wrists and ankles and at height. No injury.

Mitchell is the kind of athlete every Parkour gym should aim to build, encourage or inspire.
On ya mitch

Last week I looked out onto the Parkour floor to see our amazing instructor quietly drilling one of the most disgusting challenges I've ever seen in the gym.

No fanfare, no ego, not even a camera... just quietly facing fear and kicking ass.

Naturally I ran over with my camera to undo all his quiet dignity.

Cris exemplifies everything Parkour should be. The calm, the discipline, the friendship, the joy, the exploration and doing crazy stuff in a scientific manner.

This challenge isn't finished.... Yet
But it is gross and it is cool.

During the April school holiday workshops we ran a T-shirt design competition. We have committed to manufacturing the best design as redesigned by our resident artist.

We've run into a problem.

Not only am I horribly indecisive but there were some truly awesome designs submitted. I just can't choose.

Last week we ran our monthly Instructor training. I asked them to choose for me.
They argued so long and so fiercely it was closer to a riot than discussion.

SO. WHAT TO DO?

We've made a shortlist!

In a week the design with the most likes and/or comments will be the shirt we make!

The winning designer will receive their design on a shirt AND the redesigned shirt AND a free holiday workshop next term AND will get to see their shirt in the AAPES store!

I have 300 shirt designs on my office table so a huge CONGRATULATIONS to:

WOLFIE
SAVANNAH (TWICE)
ZAK
BANJO
JACK
and
OLIVER

For making the shortlist!

It never stops being scary, You just get stronger than the fear.
Big man hitting one of the gyms sketchiest jumps and making it look easy.

People are still amazing. People are still awesome.
There is no skill ceiling to Parkour.
There is no completion point.
Imagination and guts are all you need to train forever.
Boredom is for people who stop thinking.
Big ups to for waking us up again ;p
Coolest thing I've seen in a hot minute

When Zac walked into AAPES like... a decade ago it was clear he was destined for great things.
Today Zac is competing in Korea. The first step towards his inevitable global dominance.
Parkour and Freerunning are about fear. Understanding it, managing it, overcoming or respecting it, because of this no coach or gym can take any credit for a student's hard work.
Zac did it himself. Blood, sweat, tears, laughter, putting up with "people talking too much" and more.
We are all so proud of you dude.
Link in bio for the competition live feed!
Love you Zac.
