A partly cloudy and windy day in the mountains with warm NW winds at 60-85km/hr. Showers will develop tonight as a strong system crosses the mountains and it will be a wet and windy day tomorrow before colder westerly winds and snow showers above 1600m Saturday night into Sunday.
The warm weather and hairdryer northwesterlies have seen the already-thin snow cover deteriorate over the past past few days, the result being Charlotte Pass will close on Saturday with Buller, Falls Creek and Mt Hotham closing on Sunday.

The Grasshopper's weekend forecast- Another Blow to the Snowpack Before a Little Fresh Snow This Weekend
"Our thin snowpack took another hammering Wednesday night when a passing front brought rain and strong, warm northwest winds. New South Wales bore the brunt, with 22–33mm filling the gauges, while Victoria got off lighter with only a little rain. As a result, Charlotte Pass will have its last hurrah on Saturday and Hotham, Falls Creek and Buller will close on Sunday.
"Unfortunately, things aren’t going to get any better, with an OK Friday giving way to a gnarly storm overnight into Saturday. Heavy rain and gale-to-severe-gale northwest winds will deal another big blow to the already fragile snowpack, potentially putting the nail in the coffin for some resorts.
"There is a little reward at the end, though, as colder air arrives later Saturday and turns the rain to snow about the mid and upper slopes. Around 2-10cm of fresh snow could accumulate up high before things dry out Sunday morning, with sunshine breaking out. From there, high pressure settles things down nicely for a mostly sunny work week......."

After last weekend’s very warm temperatures and three day’s of hairdryer northwest winds, the fragile snow cover has taken big hit with significant snow loss over the past week. The result is early closures this weekend, Charlottes Pass closing on Saturday while Falls, Hotham and Buller will close on Sunday.
At this stage Perisher and Thredbo plan to keep lifts open for as long as conditions allow. Reggae Elliss reports for Perisher with thanks to XTM Performance.
Partly cloudy with a few isolated showers today and the unsettled weather will continue over the next two days. The snow cover has taken a beating over the past week, warm temps last weekend followed by hairdryer north west wide accelerating the snow melt.
A stronger front is due on Saturday with rain and and gusty NW winds, before a westerly change delivers colder temps and snow above 1600 metres, with 5-10cms likely by Sunday morning.

After a wild weekend that saw heavy snowfalls, rain and gale force winds, things have settled down across the Southern Lakes resorts with a few powder top ups this week.
However a strong westerly air flow will deliver more snow later in the week, but fluctuating temps could see some rain at times.
Nick Hyne reports from Snow Farm NZ with thanks to Queenstown, New Zealand and Wānaka, New Zealand.
The Snow Australia National Interschools Championship kicked off Perisher yesterday and will run through to Sunday, Sept 6.
There’s nearly 1,800 competitors from 357 schools with kids Kindy to Year 12 involved. Good luck to everyone competing and have fun! 🎥 Perisher
It may be the last day of winter but it felt like summer on the mountain today, with sunshine light winds and a max temp off 12 degrees. There has been significant snow melt over the past few days, but cold overnight temps and low humidity have been maintaining fun spring snow conditions on the open runs and in the terrain parks.
A change will deliver strong NW winds and rain tomorrow night and Wednesday, unsettled weather continuing into the weekend.

The The Grasshopper's Australian Forecast – One Last Cracker Before a Wet & Windy Start to Spring
Published early Monday, 31st August 2026
"Make the most of another cracking day in the Aussie Alps today, Monday, because things go downhill pretty quickly from here. Warm sunshine and blue skies give way to strengthening northwest winds on Tuesday as a front approaches, with rain showers arriving after closing time and continuing through a soggy Wednesday, taking another bite out of our already precious snowpack.
A colder change early Thursday could squeeze out a few light flurries, but unfortunately it won’t last, with rain showers returning later in the day. Friday brings more cloud, wind and showers before a stronger front delivers a more thorough soaking after dark. It’s not exactly the start to spring we were hoping for, although there are at least some chances for a little fresh snow over the weekend and early next week....."
