Ciriaco Cañete served with the U.S. Army Forces Far East (USAFFE) during World War II; during the Japanese occupation. He served as 2nd Lieutenant Combat Intelligence Officer, Cebu area (guerilla forces). In 1945, he was transferred to the 38th Military Police Company, where he served as Chief Instructor in Defense Tactics and trained the 38th & 39th MP companies stationed in Dumanjug, Cebu. He was Military Police Detachment Commander. He studied at the University of Southern Philippines and taught martial arts in various Cebu schools.

He also taught pangamot (empty hand versus weapons). The single stick is a training weapon used to represent a short sword, machete (bolo, pinute) or knife. During this time Cacoy Cañete revolutionized the use of the stick, incorporating traditional linear strikes (corto orihinal) with hooking strikes, butts, thrusts and developing a system of curving and circular strikes (corto kurbada); the strikes were used in conjunction with traps, locks, throws and disarms. Cañete began incorporating concepts of pangamot, ju jitsu and judo into his system as early as 1948; later incorporating aikido into his combat system. "Eskrido" or 'way of eskrima" was the name Cacoy Cañete gave to this revolutionary system of single stick combat.

SGM Cacoy won more than one hundred unarmed “no rules” & no armour bouts, using a multi-style approach. He was the pre-eminent Filipino warrior & one of the world’s first true Mixed Martial Artists.
❤️❤️❤️🥋We feel honoured to carry on his legacy.

2017 UCLA PCN Filipino Tinikling 01/08/2020

A Filipino folk dance that originated during the Spanish colonial era.

These students are performing the Tinikling, where a pair bamboo poles are used. In the later half of the vid, they perform Singkil, where 2x pairs of bamboo sticks are crisscrossed.

The folk dance is named after a Filipino bird - Tikling.

The dance represent how the bird would avoid bamboo traps set out by rice farmers. As the birds would feed on the farmers rice grain crops.

Here we adapted our disarm drills, to focus entirely on finding the effective angle and limit the use of both hands.

To learn and understand that the lead up, set up, ex*****on and follow through of the drill...is initiated by the hips and the core.

We gain an understanding of angles, importance of simultaneous movements, timing and adapting.

We acknowledge our lineage to GM Craig, GM Martin and SGM Cacoy Canete.

A good friend and I, were talking about training and teaching in our respective disciplines.

Master Wilz Barisic ... who not only teaches the health and healing aspects, also the hand-to-hand combat in Tai Chi.

Our conversation turned to - Relaxing.

Every Grandmaster, Master, Sensei, Sifu, G**o and amatuer fighter, I have had direct contact with, have all said something like... "You have to learn to relax", for the question - "How can I improve and develop".

It's a nice long journey of self discovery, to understand what "relax" means. Difficult to understand, as there are different levels, let alone, how to teach it.

I asked Master Wilz, how do you teach your students, how to relax? He provided an answer, with a likeness to meditation. Slowly focus on relaxing the entire body.

I responded ... It's easy to do that, but when you're under-pressure, it's a whole other thing. Especially when my pressure point is being attacked.

Master Wilz replied;

"... if you cannot relax, when, you are NOT under pressure, then, you simply cannot be relaxed when you are under pressure".

This exchange, helped me to understand that 'Relax/Relaxed', is a state of 'being', not something you do.

Our 2017 family holiday to the Philippines, Manila.

We visited the historical site, Fort Santiago. We learnt about a Filipino national hero - Jose Rizal.

He fought for peaceful reform from Spanish rule. He was held at Fort Santiago prior to his ex*****on.

Jose Rizal had a major part and influenced the country, to take it's first steps towards independence.

Salamat
