If we’re serious about developing dancers, we have to be serious about developing their foundations…aka BALLET 🩰
Ballet isn’t about turning every dancer into a ballerina. It’s about giving dancers the technical tools their bodies need to move with strength, control, alignment, coordination and understanding.
We can’t ask young dancers to perform increasingly advanced turns, leaps, extensions, tricks and choreography while treating foundational training as ‘optional’.
Because the tricks are not the training!!!
And short-term results should never come at the expense of long-term development.
As teachers and studio owners, we have a huge amount of influence over what dancers prioritise, what they believe “good dancing” looks like, and ultimately how prepared their bodies are for the demands we place on them.
A trophy lasts a moment, but a strong technical foundation will support a dancer for years to come.
So if you’re calling a program elite, competition, or advanced we have to ask:
Are we actually providing the training required to support that level of movement?
Our responsibility is bigger than creating dancers who look impressive for a comp season.
It’s to create dancers who are strong, technical, educated, versatile, resilient and able to keep dancing.
The foundation matters most, and ballet is the foundation that every serious dancer should train in whether they like it or not!
