PRESIDENT'S ADDRESS
Botswana Boxing Association Annual General Meeting 2026
BNSC and BNOC representatives,Distinguished delegates, members of the Executive Committee, representatives of our affiliates, coaches, athletes, technical officials, partners, invited guests, ladies and gentlemen,
Good morning.
It is my honour and privilege to welcome you all to the Botswana Boxing Association Annual General Meeting. This gathering remains one of the most important platforms in our calendar, providing us with an opportunity to reflect on our progress, account to our members, and collectively shape the future of boxing in Botswana.
As we meet today, we do so with a sense of responsibility, unity, and optimism. Since assuming office in August 2025, the Executive Committee has committed itself to a clear and deliberate agenda: to reposition Botswana boxing as a well-governed, competitive, sustainable, and internationally respected sport.
Our approach has been guided by one simple principle: building systems, not moments.
We have resisted the temptation to focus solely on short-term activities and instead concentrated on laying strong foundations that will benefit the sport long after our tenure. Every initiative, programme, and decision we have implemented since August 2025 has been aligned to a broader strategic vision aimed at transforming boxing in Botswana.
Delegates, one of our first priorities was to strengthen governance and create structures capable of driving the sport forward. We firmly believe that the development of boxing cannot be the responsibility of the Executive Committee alone. Sustainable growth requires active participation from clubs, coaches, athletes, officials, and other stakeholders.
For this reason, we have established and activated a number of commissions and committees, many of which are led by capable individuals drawn directly from our affiliate clubs. These structures have improved participation in decision-making, enhanced accountability, and ensured that the responsibility for developing boxing is shared across the entire boxing family.
As an Executive Committee, we have also invested considerable effort in promoting unity, teamwork, and collaboration within our leadership structures. We understand that progress can only be achieved when leaders work together towards a common purpose. While differences of opinion are natural in any democratic organisation, we have remained committed to reconciliation, collective responsibility, and mutual respect. Our focus has always been on what is best for boxing rather than individual interests.
A major milestone during the period under review has been the development and implementation of the Botswana Boxing Association Strategic Plan 2025–2028. This document provides a clear roadmap for our future and outlines our priorities in governance, athlete development, high performance, stakeholder engagement, financial sustainability, and commercial growth.
The strategy is not merely a document for compliance purposes. It is a practical guide that informs our decisions and ensures that our resources are directed towards programmes that deliver measurable impact.
Another significant achievement has been the successful launch of the National Boxing League. For many years, stakeholders have called for a structured and predictable competition framework. The League answers that call.
It provides athletes with regular competition opportunities, enables proper rankings and performance monitoring, improves talent identification, and strengthens national team selection processes. More importantly, it moves us away from isolated tournaments and towards a season-based competition model that rewards consistency, discipline, and performance.
The National Boxing League is not simply a competition. It is a development pathway, a high-performance tool, and a platform through which we intend to build a stronger boxing product for athletes, supporters, sponsors, and partners.
Delegates, athlete development remains at the heart of our strategy. Through tournaments, national camps, official sparring programmes, and structured competition opportunities, we have worked to ensure that our athletes remain active and continue to develop.
We have been particularly intentional about youth development. During the period under review, we successfully hosted youth championships and continued to support grassroots boxing initiatives. We recognise that the future success of Botswana boxing depends on the investments we make today in young athletes. Our objective is to create a clear pathway that allows talented young boxers to progress from grassroots participation to elite competition.
We have also continued to strengthen our technical capacity. During the year under review, a number of National Referees and Judges successfully completed training and qualification programmes. These officials are already contributing positively at competitions across the country, helping to improve the quality, credibility, and integrity of our events.
We are encouraged by the growing recognition of Botswana officials at regional and international levels. Their success demonstrates that our investment in technical development is beginning to bear fruit and positions Botswana as a respected contributor to the development of boxing beyond our borders.
With regard to coaching development, we recognise that coaches remain the backbone of athlete performance. While we have not yet conducted coaching courses during the reporting period, plans are already underway to roll out coaching development and refresher programmes as part of our strategic priorities. We remain committed to equipping our coaches with the skills and knowledge necessary to meet the demands of modern boxing.
Our ambition as an Association remains clear. We do not want Botswana boxing to merely participate at international competitions. We want Botswana boxing to compete, perform, and win.
As we prepare for future international assignments, including qualification pathways towards the Commonwealth Games, Olympic Games, and other major championships, our focus remains on building sustainable systems that can consistently produce athletes capable of competing at the highest level.
Financial sustainability remains one of our most important priorities. While we continue to appreciate the support provided by Government, the Botswana National Sport Commission, and our stakeholders, we recognise that public funding alone cannot meet the growing needs of the sport.
We must therefore continue to strengthen partnerships, attract sponsorship, improve our commercial offering, and position boxing as a valuable platform for investment. A financially sustainable Association will be better placed to support athletes, clubs, development programmes, and high-performance initiatives.
Beyond competition, we remain committed to the social impact of boxing. Through initiatives focused on mental health awareness, youth empowerment, women's participation, and community engagement, we continue to demonstrate that boxing is more than a sport. It is a vehicle for personal development, social inclusion, discipline, and hope.
As we look ahead, our priorities remain clear. We must continue strengthening clubs, developing athletes, empowering coaches and officials, expanding participation, improving governance, and building stronger partnerships. We must continue to innovate while remaining grounded in the core values that define our sport: discipline, respect, courage, integrity, and excellence.
To our affiliates, thank you for your continued trust and support.
To our athletes, thank you for carrying the pride and aspirations of our nation.
To our coaches, technical officials, volunteers, and administrators, thank you for your dedication and sacrifices.
To our partners and stakeholders, thank you for believing in our vision and supporting our journey.
The road ahead will require hard work, patience, and commitment. However, I remain confident that together, as one boxing family, we possess the leadership, talent, and determination necessary to take Botswana boxing to greater heights.
The foundations have been laid.
The structures are active.
The vision is clear.
The future is taking shape.
And indeed, the future of Botswana boxing is bright.
