She forgot her racket at her house, but she showed up anyway and she wasn’t missing today’s training. So we found a slightly bigger racket for her in the office and the smile was very clear for all to see.

Italian Tennis v Australian Tennis

Italy seems to have built a competition ecosystem. Australia has often leaned too heavily on a centralised pathway model.

Australia has the Australian Open, but not enough meaningful domestic professional playing opportunities across the year. For a developing Australian player, the travel burden is brutal. To chase points, players often have to go to Europe, Asia or the US. That creates a financial barrier that many talented players simply cannot overcome.

Italy’s model says:
bring the pathway to the player.

Australia’s model too often says:
send the player to the pathway.

That is a major philosophical difference.

The lesson for Australian tennis

Australia should be asking:

How do we create more Futures, Challengers and WTA/ATP development events in Australia?

How do we keep players connected to their own coaches rather than pulling them into overly controlled systems?

How do we use the Australian Open money to strengthen clubs, coaches, courts and domestic competition?

How do we make the player pathway less dependent on family wealth?

How do we support more private coach-led excellence rather than only federation-selected athletes?

Tennis Australia’s stated participation goal is ambitious — one million registered players and four million Australians having a hit each year. But participation alone does not produce champions. You need a bridge between participation and professionalism.

That bridge is exactly where Italy has been smart.

This photo is not just about training and physical effort, but about the essential relationship between coach and player.
Reflects the understanding and support that transcends terrestrial borders, permeating both battles and private challenges.
a coach is not just a figure of authority: he is a rock, a mentor, and a friend.
His arm, though bloody from effort, offers safety and encouragement, reminding players they're not alone in their battles.
this picture shows how success is achieved not only through talent and hard work, but also through empathy, support, and mutual understanding.
is the story of a deep connection that nourishes the soul and inspires the heart, highlighting the importance of coaches not only in sporting activity but also in the life of each individual who lives it.

It is never easy to find the FLOW state once an athlete gets out of that tunnel of focus.
