If I could tell every competitive dance parent ONE thing, it would be this...
Private lessons are an incredible investment in your dancer, but they should never replace consistent classroom training.
Private lessons absolutely have a place. They help build strength, improve technique, increase flexibility, clean skills, and give dancers one-on-one attention to work on specific areas of growth. We encourage them when they’re being used with purpose.
But here’s what private lessons can’t fully replicate...
✨ Learning choreography in a busy classroom.
✨ Adapting to different dancers, formations, and classroom dynamics.
✨ Applying corrections while continuing to dance.
✨ Developing musicality, performance quality, and stage presence alongside teammates.
✨ Building the focus, independence, resilience, and teamwork that competitive dance requires.
Competitive dance is a team sport.
When our faculty evaluates dancers for the competitive program, we’re looking at much more than technical ability. We’re looking for dancers who can learn in a group, adapt, collaborate, take corrections, perform with confidence, and contribute positively to their team.
Those are skills that are developed week after week in the classroom.
Private lessons can absolutely help accelerate growth in a specific area, but they are designed to support what happens in class, not replace it.
If you’re deciding where to invest your time and energy, here’s my advice:
Never choose private lessons over class time.
Use private lessons to strengthen the skills your dancer is learning in class, not as a substitute for the classroom experience itself.
That’s where well-rounded dancers are built. 💛

✨ Auditions are coming — and spots are Limited ✨
Team placement at Caledonia Studio of Dance is something we take seriously, and every year we make sure each dancer is placed where they will truly thrive. That means auditions aren’t just a formality, they matter!
Here’s what we look at when placing dancers on teams:
⭐ Audition Performance — Can you pick up combinations quickly? Do you stay composed under pressure? Is your technique on point?
🧠 Age & Development Level — We assess emotional and social maturity, technical progression, comprehension, and coachability.
📅 Attendance & Commitment — Class attendance history, punctuality, and showing up for every important event. This one is non-negotiable.
🙌 Classroom Behaviour — Active listening, respect, consideration for others, and a positive attitude and eagerness to grow.
Each factor counts equally, 25% each. Because being a great dancer is about way more than what you can do in one audition.
Spots are limited, and placement is competitive. If this is the year you’re ready to commit, we want to see you there!
