Don't park it dirty. Winterize the tractor first.

The mowing is nearly done — and how you put your lawn tractor away this month decides what kind of spring you get. A machine stored tired, dirty and full of old fuel spends the winter quietly working against itself. Twenty minutes of care now, or a shop visit in April when everyone else needs one too.

1. Treat or drain the fuel
Gas left sitting turns to varnish and gums the carburetor — the single most common reason a tractor won't start in spring. Add stabilizer and run it through, or drain the tank dry.

2. Change the oil while it's warm
Used oil carries acid and moisture. Leaving it in the crankcase for five idle months etches bearings and cylinder walls. Fresh oil and a new filter cost less than one repair.

3. Clean the deck, sharpen the blades
Packed grass holds moisture against bare metal all winter and rusts a deck from the inside. Scrape it out, and get the blades sharpened and balanced now instead of in the queue.

4. Battery, filters, tires, grease
Pull the battery onto a tender, swap the air filter and plug, top the tires, grease the fittings, and cover it in a dry spot off bare concrete.

Why now, not later: spring is when every tractor in the county arrives at once, and a two-week wait lands right when the grass is growing fastest. Fall service is quicker, cheaper, and it's the difference between turning the key and making a phone call.
