The Cowichan Rugby Football Club is deeply saddened to share that Gudmund Gudmundseth has passed away at the age of 81.
Gudy was one of the club’s early members, joining in the 1960s. He went on to become one of the most influential figures in the club’s history. A fearsome and uncompromising prop, he played the game with a hard edge and a physical presence that made him a standout in the front row and a player few ever forgot. He was the first CRFC player to represent Canada on the international stage, also representing British Columbia many times.
Gudy’s impact on Cowichan Rugby extended far beyond the pitch. From the club’s earliest days, he was instrumental in shaping its future, playing a key role in the acquisition of the Herd Road grounds and helping to secure a home for generations of Cowichan players, families, and supporters who have since called Piggy Park their own. He took immense pride in the acquisition of the ScrumMaster, maintaining it and coaching the forwards on it from day one.
Gudy served in many other roles, including club president, coach, barman, and bus driver. Alongside others, he was instrumental in the club’s highly successful bingo program, which generated significant funds that directly supported major improvements, including pitch development and broader club modernization. This legacy places him among the most important figures in our history.
Off the field, Gudy and Angie helped define Cowichan’s long-standing reputation as a welcoming and generous hosting club. Whether organizing events, contributing countless hours, or simply showing up with prawns and seafood for visiting teams and club gatherings, he embodied the spirit of the rugby community in every sense.
Gudy is survived by his wife, Angie; his children & grandchildren; Louis, Maggie & Carly; Andrew & Sarah, Landon, Mason & Ava; Janet and Andrew Koza, Leni & Jack.
Whether known as Gudy or G-Man, he was a constant presence across generations of Cowichan Rugby: player, leader, builder, and character in the fullest sense of the word—the quintessential Cowichan Rugby Club man.
On behalf of the entire Cowichan Rugby family, we extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends, teammates, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Rest in Peace our Valhalla Viking Warrior
Thank you to the McGeachy family for creating this beautiful tribute.
