Practitioners perform a set sequence of attacks, blocks, and counter-attacks with a partner.

We practice this because It bridges the gap between solo [Kata] and unscripted free sparring [Jiyu Kumite].

A nafuda wall is a display board in a Japanese martial arts dojo. It holds wooden name tags called nafuda.

Each tag shows a student's name, usually in Japanese characters. The rack holding them is called a nafudakake.

Mae geri (前蹴り) is the Japanese term for the fundamental “front kick” used in karate and other martial arts.

It is primarily executed by lifting the knee straight up, driving the hips forward, and snapping the foot out to strike with the ball of the foot (or the heel) and because we practice Uechi-ryu we use our toes.

Kanshu (完周)

Its name is made up of the first Kanji “Kan” (完) in honor of Kanbun Uechi and the first Kanji “Shu” (周) in honor of Shu Shiwa.

This kata aims to teach precision in both movements and timing, with the introduction of crane techniques.

In Seisan, this crane stance is famously used right before the kata’s dynamic jump backward. As a defensive mechanism, shifting into the crane stance allows you to quickly yield from a sweeping kick or a close-range grappling hook, off-balance your opponent, and set up a swift counterstrike or explosive retreat.

Yudansha (有段者) is a Japanese
term translating to “rank holder” or “person who has a dan (degree)”. In martial arts like karate, judo, and aikido, it specifically refers to anyone who holds a black belt rank.
