Snow, bone chilling temperatures and equipment are all part of winter but challenges with all of the above have slowed the official opening of the #acso. Oval Coordinator Bryce was outside with Smash and Sons today as they cleared snow from the 400m surface. Maximum Tank Truck Services hopes to get in another flood this evening as the ice is still a bit rough. Sunday snow is anticipated so the outlook is deal with that, maybe another flood and skating conditions should be really good early this week.

Bryce did an ice-check skate today (video).

It's a free public skating ice surface so skate carefully at your own risk (bring a lawn chair for distancing).

Signs with safety comments and rules plus benches will be out in the next few days after an "oval opening" post is made.
The ice is in ok condition for casual or technical skating drills and maybe the odd short speed burst.

Fun SUNGLASSES skate noon today, Saturday, at the #acso!
After virtual open houses and before an acreage showing I will be at the #acso helping kids of all ages get some fun times. COme skate a 100m, 300m, 500m and if you are age 10-15 we can enter you in a Speed Skating Canada fun draw. See you at the Aquatera Community Skating Oval at 2:30pm!
It was windy at the oval today but a lot of fun. Some kids there for a public skate joined in and got some times and will be entered in a draw for prizes from Speed Skating Canada. Hope some more skaters from Peace Wapiti Speed Skating Club will be at the #acso Sunday 2:30pm for more fun racing. The times don't matter; just skate the 100m or 300m or 500m and get a time from Coach John and if you are 10-15 years old you are entered in the draw.
Canadian Youth Challenge contest at the oval today. Kids aged 10-15 can be timed in 100m, 300m, 500m distances and have their names entered into a draw for prizes courtesy of Speed Skating Canada!

2:30pm-3:30pm Saturday and Sunday at the #acso.

The Aquatera Community Skating Oval is open for free public skating (but please no hockey sticks). We will have benches spread around asap but just bring lawn chairs so you can lace up away from others and enjoy some physical distancing recreation on a 400m ice surface (lots of space). And our Peace Wapiti Speed Skating Club is looking forward to Wood Buffalo 2022 Arctic Winter Games so if you have some young skaters, get them to the oval to skate and contact me about how they may be eligible for the Games!
Aquatera Community Skating Oval is open!

Merry Christmas everyone! The #acso is open and ready for public use! Please dress warm and stay safe ⛸

Lights will be on starting in the New Year, Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm

Mask up, bring lawn chairs so you can lace up away from others and give me all the laps you can muster mister. Pretty warm today but my son Bryce gave the green light to open so please enjoy a safe and fun skate and respect others' space.

Check the #acso page for timely updates.

Merry Christmas to you and yours! Go for a skate at the Aquatera Community Skating Oval.
Peace Wapiti Speed Skating Club Head Coach RE/MAX John MacLennan Grande Prairie filmed a few minutes of Sunday's Club lunch and skate at the oval. We were very excited to see many community families out for a skate too!

Hosted by the Peace Wapiti Speed Skating Club The Aquatera Community Skating Oval is graciously hosted by the Peace Wapiti Speed Skating Club in partnership with the City of Grande Prairie.

Located West of Eastlink Centre on the Community Knowledge Campus, it’s a 400 metre outdoor skating surface that community members can access free of charge. Hockey sticks and pucks are strictly prohibited. We hope to see you on the ice!

Tuesday update… more snow that needs to be brushed off. ❄️❄️❄️☃️
Hoping for some maintenance to improve the top surface. Ice is still fairly thick otherwise.

03/13/2022

Sunday update: Saturday had above zero temperatures and warmth making for soft ice in the afternoon. Today’s wind chill is -20C. It’s a rough skating surface. Okay for frigid, fresh air laps this morning.
⚠️Ramp from parking lot to oval is very slippery. Consider walking through the snow instead.

Update Friday, March 11th. ✅#ACSO is open. North straightaway is nice ice. ⚠️ Caution on the West corner.

❇️A cold flood followed by a hot flood has really helped improve conditions on the Aquatera Community Skating Oval. We’re hoping for the weather to cooperate.

⚠️Ramp from the parking lot to oval is icy, a bit rough & has some dirt. Use caution.

🔄Please skate counter clockwise.
🪑Benches are available to sit on to put on your skates, or bring your own lawnchair.

☑️Figure skates
☑️Hockey skates
☑️Strollers / carts with clean wheels. Please NO muddy / slushy / salty wheels. It damages the ice surface.
❌No hockey pucks or sticks

Located on the Community Knowledge Campus, West of Eastlink Centre.

THANK YOU to our Aquatera Community Skating Oval Co-ordinator Bryce for all the energy you pour into supporting speed skating locally!
⭐️You are our Unsung Hero!!! ⭐️

Ice conditions Monday, March 7th. 🤪
We’re hoping that the oval can be flooded tonight to help smooth it out.

Photos from Aquatera Community Skating Oval's post 03/06/2022

Unfortunately the surface of the #acso remains rough and requires perhaps another brushing and certainly an awaited flood. Some intrepid skaters have been out there but the ice is rough and bumpy. Optimism for some aligned maintenance to smooth it out soon.

🔄❄️ A visit from the SNOW BRUSH.
Coach John also posted a video update.

More snow.

Friday update: We’re hoping to get the snow brushed off and then flood the oval tonight. If equipment is in the area, please give them the time & space needed for maintenance.

We’re dreaming of smooth ice & making the laps on the oval again. 😊

We hope to invite the community for skating again soon! 💚

Snow blown & a possible flood tonight at #ACSO.
(Thursday, February 24th).

😄We’re hoping for good weather this weekend and the Peace Wapiti Speed Skating Club would like to get on the oval around lunchtime Sunday.
You’re welcome to stop by, say hello and see speed skating up close.

✴️ Open for a slow skate ✴️
The oval has been snow blown with some areas more "icy" than others. The maintenance crew might also try a brush to clear the rest of the snow away and a possible flood this evening. ❄️🌬💧 (Thursday, February 17th update.)

We’re working on getting a smooth surface before the forecasted snow arrives.

🌀Have you been skating on the oval recently? Comment ⤵️

Hoping for good ice conditions this Family Day weekend! 😄😎😊🤩

Canadian women claim 1st ever Olympic gold in team pursuit 02/15/2022

Canadian women claim 1st ever Olympic gold in team pursuit

The reason we have the #acso built as a 400m skating oval is so you can experience the same straightaways, the same corners, the same distances - as the Olympians. Their journeys started on an ice surface somewhere. Yours can start right here in Grande Prairie: inside at the Coca Cola Centre short track or outside on the long track. As was posted on the Peace Wapiti Speed Skating Club page, never give up, keep skating, because someday a Gold medal may just be on the line:

https://www.cbc.ca/player/play/2003170371795/

Canadian women claim 1st ever Olympic gold in team pursuit Canadian speed skaters Isabelle Weidemann, Ivanie Blondin and Valérie Maltais win the gold medal in women's team pursuit with an Olympic record time of 2:53.44.

Saturday heavy winds and warmth have pools on the #acso so please continue to "keep off the ice".

02/11/2022

❌Best to stay off the oval today. (Friday, February 11th). It’s still rough and pock marked. This morning’s test skate was extremely slow and cautious.⚠️

💙Feeling hopeful! ❄️💨 The ice is hanging in there. ⚠️⚠️⚠️Please remain off the oval while we’re considering options for surfacing. Thank you 💙(Thursday, February 10th)
