Margaret Sailing Club, home to world-class events and to a boating community of friendly folks. Whether you are participating in one of our club races, cruising, gunk holing or picnicking on the water, or socializing at our comfortable clubhouse and grounds, you’ll be sure to come across people who are passionate about the sport – and St. Of course, you won’t know whether you're talking to a world-champion sailor (we have a number) or to someone like me, who first experienced sailing in mid age. Given the club’s laid-back style, finding out the difference might not be easy-- the champs don’t wear feathers in their caps!

Keelboat Racing

Sunday September 27th saw a smaller turnout than normal, just seven boats. But the weather, if not the wind, moderated as the day went on, and competitors retired to the deck in full sunshine after finishing. Spray continued her winning streak in A-class and Intrepid won B-class after overtaking Waverunner on the last leg of the race. Two more races left in the season: if weather and haul-out schedules allow, why not join the racers on the water?

After the season's end we plan to hold the season prizegiving on a Friday evening. Expect food, but what form and format is still in planning.

Keelboat Racing

It was a double-header weekend with the rescheduled double-handed race on Saturday and the second race of the September Series on Sunday.

Saturday’s double-handed race started from the club line in a variable Northerly with big variations in strength and direction. With Northerly winds the water was unusually flat for the Bay and clear skies made for a pleasant afternoon. Sunday’s September Series race was a bit more conventional with Southeasterly winds, backing as the day went on. To continue with baseball analogies, the winners swept the double header. Spray 2 won A-class and Blondie won B, despite doing an unusual number of penalty turns in the double-handed race race. Both races were followed by warm social gatherings, either on the club deck (Saturday) or in the clubhouse (Sunday). Care to join us next Sunday?

Bay SailAble T-Dock News

Bay SailAble’s operations were restricted this summer by problems with the club’s personnel dockside lift during load testing (deflection was too large under the certification load). SMSC contracted Eagle Beach Marine Contracting to design, construct and certify (test) a new, stiffer lift foundation using grant funds. Work started this week and Eagle Beach completed manufacture and installation of the new steel foundation structure for the lift on Friday. Certification testing to follow. Bring on next year!

Barbara Milledge Celebration of Life.
The Board offers its condolences in the death of member Barbara Milledge, August 30, 2026. Barbara was a Halifax native with a career in intensive care nursing both in Canada and the US. She leaves behind loving friends and family. A celebration of life will be held at SMSC from 3-6 pm, Friday September 18th.

Eight boats started on the club line today in the first race of SMSC’s September Keelboat Series.
Winds were brisk and Spray 2 won A, reveling in the lumpy beat from Charlie to Ringdove, as every Etchells does. Blondie won B despite the beat, courtesy of a long, fast spinnaker reach from Charlie to the club line finish and a little help from WaveRunner, who sailed the A-course instead of the B-course. A good time was had by all – any day is a good day if you are sailing.
