SAINT JOHN — The AJ’s Saint John Alpines held off a furious seventh-inning comeback attempt by the Chatham Ironmen on Thursday night, hanging on for a nail-biting 7-6 victory.
Chatham struck first in the top of the first frame as Jake Cook drove home Jeff Watkin with an RBI single, but Saint John answered back immediately in the bottom half. Highlighted by a two-run double off the bat of Ryan Galbraith, the Alpines scored three runs against Chatham starter Nick Leggatt, who also survived a scare after taking a line drive off the upper body .
After Zack Goose cut the deficit to 3-2 with a solo home run in the third, the Alpines pulled further ahead. Mark Legere launched a solo shot of his own in the bottom of the third, followed by an RBI single from Ryan Maloney. Saint John added single runs in the fourth and sixth innings—including an RBI hit from Galbraith—to extend their cushion to 7-4 entering the final frame.
The Ironmen made a desperate final push in the top of the seventh. Kris Keating launched his second home run of the game—a solo shot to lead off the inning—before Logan Walsh smashed a two-out solo homer to bring Chatham within a single run. However, Galbraith shut the door, inducing a pop-out to shortstop to seal the complete-game victory.
Final Score: Saint John Alpines 7, Chatham Ironmen 6

The Alpines return to the road Friday night, travelling to Fredericton to face the Royals.
