Join us for a FREE Course Walk!

Whether you’re competing, thinking about competing, or simply want to learn more, everyone is welcome to join us for a special Hunter Trial Course Walk with our judge, Sue MacIntosh.

🕘 Sunday at 9:00 AM

Sue will walk the course with riders and spectators, explaining:
• What a judge is looking for in a Hunter Trial.
• How style, rhythm, and pace affect your score.
• Where riders can earn extra points (or lose them!).
• Tips to help you ride your best round.

This is a fantastic opportunity to learn from an experienced judge before the competition begins. Even if you’ve never ridden a Hunter Trial before, you’ll leave with a much better understanding of what makes a winning round.

Can my horse do the hunters?

One of the most common questions we hear is, “What makes a good hunter horse?”

Unlike jumpers, where speed and clear rounds determine the winner, hunter horses are judged on the overall quality of their performance. The goal is to make the ride look smooth, effortless, and enjoyable.

Judges are looking for a horse that:

• Maintains a consistent rhythm throughout the course.

• Has a long, flowing stride that covers the ground naturally.

• Jumps each fence with good form, confidence, and straightness.

• Is quiet, obedient, and responsive to the rider.

• Appears relaxed and willing, making the entire round look easy.

The rider plays an equally important role. A balanced position, quiet hands, and subtle communication allow the horse to perform at its best.

A beautiful hunter round isn’t about being the fastest or jumping the highest. It’s about harmony between horse and rider, creating a round that looks effortless from beginning to end.

Hunter horses were originally bred and trained to carry riders comfortably and safely across the countryside for hours. Today’s Hunter Trials celebrate those same qualities—rhythm, style, manners, and partnership.
