The South Saskatchewan River is flowing faster and higher than normal, creating significantly more dangerous conditions for anyone on or near the water.
Recent releases from Gardiner Dam have increased river flows from approximately 240 m³/s to as high as 700 m³/s, resulting in stronger currents, rising water levels, and increased hazards throughout Saskatoon. While conditions will continue to be monitored, the river remains well above typical seasonal levels and should be treated with extreme caution.
⚠️ Public boat launches in Saskatoon are currently restricted. We strongly advise the public to avoid all recreational activity on the river until conditions improve. Fast-moving water, powerful currents, floating debris, and cold water temperatures can quickly turn a routine outing into a life-threatening emergency.
🚨 The river safety buoy cable line is down once again. This cable is designed to help prevent river users from drifting into hazardous areas. Without this important safety barrier in place, the danger to anyone entering the river is even greater.
If you’re spending time near the river:
🚫 Do not swim. Swimming in the South Saskatchewan River is prohibited in Saskatoon.
🦺 Always wear a properly fitted life jacket if you’re on or near the water.
⚠️ Stay well back from the river’s edge. Higher water levels can conceal unstable banks, slippery footing, and powerful currents.
👨👩👧 Keep children and pets close. Never allow them to play near the river unattended.
📱 If you witness someone in distress in the water, call 9-1-1 immediately. Do not enter the river yourself unless you are trained and equipped to perform a water rescue.
The South Saskatchewan River is one of Saskatoon’s greatest natural attractions, but during periods of elevated flow, it demands extra respect.
Please respect all restrictions, avoid recreational use of the river, and help keep yourself, your family, and first responders safe.

Happy Canada Day from IAFF Local 80 🍁
Here are some firework safety tips:
💥Do not use professional-grade fireworks at home.
💥Keep a bucket of water or a hose handy. Soak used fireworks before discarding to prevent a trash fire.
💥Never handle malfunctioning fireworks. Soak them
with water and throw them away.
💥Keep pets and small children away from all fireworks
💥Even sparklers which can burn at about 2,000°F!
💥Never hold a firework that is not meant to be held. 💥Never point or throw fireworks (including sparklers)
at anyone.
💥Light fireworks one at a time, then move away quickly.
Stay safe and have fun! 🇨🇦 firefighter firetruck safety
