SENSEI JERRY MARR
Sensei Marr began his Martial Art journey with Judo in the last 1950’s, eventually obtaining Shodan. With Karate still in its infancy in North America, Sensei Marr began his lifelong journey in 1963. He is undoubtedly one of the earliest pioneers of Shotokan in Canada, and in North America.
Several weeks ago I reached out to Sensei to request a meeting to discuss my future book, and to confirm the early development of Karate within Manitoba. I was honoured that he not only wanted to meet, but was genuinely enthusiastic about my project. He was kind enough to share countless photos of his early days, and the dawn of his Shotokan journey.
With several sheets of paper at the ready, and a long list of questions, he endured my inquisitive nature on the most trivial of matters. Two hours of non stop discussion barely scratched the surface. During our discussions I made the mistake of asking him “being eighty five years old and looking back would you do anything different in Karate? He quickly reminded me that he is only eight four years old, before answering my question.
The final question I asked him for any advise he could give me for my Karate future. I took this question seriously, and I believe anyone that has walked the road long before myself should have their words listened to. After a moment of contemplation he replied “keep doing exactly what you are doing”.
