“Super excited. Kawhi adds so much to our team offensively, defensively, and he’s a champ; and won here. It’s going to be great. He brings a lot of new energy to the city.”

On Toronto finally getting a WNBA team:

“It’s great. Obviously, they’re playing Caitlin Clark, but I feel like our team is doing a great job. They bring a lot of new energy as well. It’s just good to see them competing.”

Exhibit 9 and Exhibit 10 contracts are commonly referred to as “summer contracts” or “training camp contracts”. These players are being brought in to provide competition in training camp, to give coaches some extra bodies for drills and scrimmages, and sometimes to prove they are worthy of a regular season roster spot.

Both Exhibit 9 and Exhibit 10 contracts are one-year, fully non-guaranteed contracts.

If a team wants to keep a player on an Exhibit 9 deal, the simplest process is to keep them on the roster for opening night. At that point, the player’s contract converts from an Exhibit 9 contract to a standard non-guaranteed contract.

An Exhibit 9 contract includes a provision that protects the player against injury while under that contract. If a player is injured while on an Exhibit 9 deal, the team is responsible for paying that player $15,000 (this is up from $6,000 in the prior CBA). That $15,000 does hit the salary cap and luxury tax as a form of dead money charge, upon the player being waived.

“Yet the Raptors sit just $2.3 million under the first apron with a total of only 13 guaranteed contracts after reacquirng Leonard. The other three teams do have just enough apron flexibility to add one more player; both Florida teams have 14 players on standard contracts and the Knicks currently have 13.”
