Can kids really just “listen to their bodies” and regulate how much they eat?
Sometimes, yes.
But as Jennifer Anderson explains in this clip, that can be asking an awful lot of kids when it comes to highly palatable, ultra-processed foods—foods that have been specifically designed to keep us eating.
So what do we do instead?
We can set limits without adding shame or judgment to those limits.
Instead of:
“You’ve had enough cookies.”
“Those aren’t healthy.”
“You need to learn some self-control.”
It can simply be:
“We’re all having two cookies today.”
That’s it.
The limit itself isn’t necessarily the problem. It’s what we communicate along with it—especially when kids in bigger bodies may already be receiving messages that there’s something wrong with how they eat or how their bodies look.
We can provide structure around food without moralizing it, making kids feel guilty for wanting it, or suggesting that they can’t trust themselves.

What if raising healthy eaters has a lot less to do with getting our kids to “eat healthy” and a lot more to do with the relationship we help them build with food AND their bodies?
Jennifer Anderson of Kids Eat in Color wants kids to know how to nourish their bodies, enjoy all kinds of food, and appreciate their bodies without absorbing the message that thin = better.
And one of the biggest ways we influence that relationship?
What our kids hear us say about OUR bodies.
In this week’s episode of The Peaceful Parenting Podcast, Jennifer and I talk about how we can raise kids who care about their health without passing down body shame or diet culture.
Plus, we get into treats, school lunches, neurodivergence and hunger/fullness cues, and how to make feeding a family a whole lot less complicated.

Sometimes our jobs as parents can feel so overwhelming.
Make sure they eat healthy food, get enough sleep, and brush their teeth.
Find a daycare we feel good about, research the schools that might be the best fit.
Expose them to sports and creative pursuits.
Provide opportunities for social interaction.
Read every day.
The list goes on…
The good news is that the most important thing we do is simple.
The most important thing is that our child FEELS loved. That we are always in their corner. That we think they’re amazing.
