Aikido is full of small details.

Stance. Footwork. Timing. Distance. Balance. Connection.

Watching Greg Sensei break down this technique reminds us how much is happening underneath the surface. A slight lean forward. Keeping your knees bent. Knowing when to withdraw your front foot.

Small details change everything.

At first, it can feel like there’s too much happening at once, especially for beginners. So we slow things down, repeat, and build the movement piece by piece.

Over time, repetition becomes muscle memory. But beyond the technique itself, aikido is really about learning to move in relationship with another person.

Sometimes the best way to understand it is to feel it. Come try a class at Naka Ima.

Working with the jo is more than just weapon movements. It helps with our understanding of distance, angles, timing, and lines… lessons that carry directly into empty hand aikido practice. Join us Saturdays 11am for weapons class and see what is all about.

In aikido, power doesn’t come from rigid arms. It comes from staying relaxed, connected, and responsive.

When the arm lets go of tension, it can adapt to your partner. It can feel, follow, and find the right path.

Your power is already there. Inside.
It’s not in the upper body at all.

Practice is learning to stay relaxed and move from your center. Come feel it for yourself.

Every technique begins before the movement. In how we stand. In where we place our attention.

It’s easy to drift, to wait for uke to attack without really being ready… especially when you’ve done it again and again.

But practice is learning to stay present, with your partner, with the moment, for the entire class.

This is “Naka Ima” (inside now).

Come experience for yourself.

In aikido, the art isn’t just in the technique. It’s in the joy of moving together, the connection with your partner, and the vibrant aiki energy that comes alive on the mat.

Experience it with Dirk Müller Sensei (Shihan, 7th Dan) at Naka Ima Toronto.

It takes courage to step into a dojo for the first time. To try something unfamiliar. To fall, get back up, and keep going.

Strength isn’t just force.
It’s balance. Timing. Awareness.
It’s the quiet confidence that grows with practice.

At Naka Ima, we train together, men and women, young and old, learning from one another as we grow.

This Women’s Day, we celebrate every woman who had the courage to step on the mat.

Thinking about trying ? All it takes is that first step. Come find your ground. 🥋

This week we took a moment to celebrate.

Not just ranks, but the years behind them. The quiet consistency. The partners who helped along the way. The senseis who shared their experience. The seniors who guided. The beginners who pushed everyone to be better.

At Naka Ima, rank isn’t the goal. It’s simply a reflection of time, effort, and study poured into practice. No one earns it alone.

Dan testing is a milestone, but what we’re really celebrating is community.

Grateful for everyone who has shared the mat with us.

If you’ve been thinking about trying aikido or haven’t been back in a while, consider this your invitation. The dojo doors are always open. Your place is here.

Don’t pull. Don’t push. Don’t rush. Don’t muscle it. Don’t use excessive force.

In this clip, Greg Sensei unpacks a simple but profound idea: let go of unnecessary strength, stay patient, and find the right timing. When you stop trying to “make” the technique happen, new possibilities appear — especially when you truly observe what’s happening with your partner.

Aikido isn’t about forcing movement. It’s about connecting with your partner, and moving with this connection.

Come feel the difference at Naka Ima. 🌊
