The Lightning Chaleur have announced that forward Ben Cross has committed to UNB REDS Men's Hockey for next season.

The 21-year-old from Fredericton, N.B. was drafted by the Fredericton Red Wings in the 2nd Round, 19th overall, in the 2022 MHL Entry Draft. He played three games for his hometown team in 2022-23 before heading to the QMJHL with the Rimouski Océanic in 2023-24 and the Saint John Sea Dogs in 2024-25.

With the franchise now in Bathurst, N.B., Cross joined the Lightning for the 2025-26 season and was named an Eastlink North All-Star after finishing second in league scoring with 78 points. His 42 goals were the most in the MHL, and Cross also had the most powerplay goals at sixteen. He finished the season with a 20-game point streak, gathering 40 points in that time, and had an eight-game goal streak, second only to the ten-game goal streak he achieved from January 9th to February 6th. From his first game when the calendar flipped to 2026, Cross had at least one goal in eighteen of his last 20 games.

Cross had points in 39 of 51 games for the Lightning and 23 multi-point games. His 78 points are third-most in franchise history, with his 42 goals in a single-season ranking second all-time for the team. Cross was named the MHL’s Top Forward for February/March and was named to the Eastlink North Team of the Week six times.

The Summerside Western Capitals have announced that forward Brennan Murphy has committed to Maryville Saints Ice Hockey, a program in Missouri transitioning to NCAA Division I.

The 20-year-old from Charlottetown, P.E.I. was selected by Summerside in the 8th round, 114th overall, in the 2021 MHL Entry Draft. Over the course of his MHL career, Murphy tallied 51 goals and 52 assists in 139 regular season games, in addition to three goals and twelve assists in 37 playoff games.

He played one game during the 2022-23 season, scoring midway through the second period in a Summerside victory. Murphy became a regular on the roster during the 2023-24 season, with eighteen goals and seventeen assists in 51 games to finish seventh in rookie scoring. He led all rookies with five game-winning goals, which was near the top of the leaderboard for all skaters, and was named to the Eastlink South Team of the Week once. During the Metalfab MHL Cup Playoffs, Murphy had two goals and six assists in seventeen games to help the Western Capitals reach the league final, where they lost to Miramichi. He was named to the Eastlink South Team of the Week twice.

In 2024-25, Murphy finished with nineteen goals and 23 assists in 50 games, and had one assists in five playoff games. He tallied thirteen goals and twelve assists in 37 games in 2025-26, with one goal and five assists in fourteen playoff games. Murphy was named to the Eastlink South Team of the Week once during the season.

Big congrats to Sam Berthiaume who has been named to Canada's National Men's Summer Under-18 Team training camp ahead of the 2026 Hlinka Gretzky Cup.

The Stellarton native is one of just three goaltenders invited to the camp which is set for July 27-Aug. 1 in Edmonton.

Last November, the Cape Breton Eagles prospect claimed silver with Canada White at the U17 World Challenge in Truro.

The 2026 Hlinka Gretzky Cup runs from Aug. 3-8 in Edmonton.
