Cecilie Mejdell and her team at the Norwegian Veterinary Institute trained horses of several breeds with small pieces of carrot. Sessions lasted 10 to 15 minutes a day, starting with simple rewards for walking up to the board and touching it.

A horizontal bar meant blanket on and a vertical bar meant blanket off, while a blank square meant no change. The horses' choices matched the weather outside, which suggested they weren't pointing at random, though the researchers say more work is needed to confirm they were stating real preferences.

If the result holds up, horses will join dolphins, pigeons and apes on the short list of animals known to communicate with people through symbols. The researchers think ordinary owners could teach their own horses the same system, and it could become a useful tool for animal welfare.
