NWT SOFTBALL | AUGUST RECAP
And just like that… the final official month of our northern ball season has come to an end!
August brought travel, Nationals appearances and plenty to be proud of across the NWT.
🇨🇦 CO-ED NATIONALS | LEDUC
The Kraft Deaners from Yellowknife headed south over the August long weekend to compete at the Co-Ed Slo-Pitch Nationals in Leduc. They battled through a HOT weekend, played some great ball and even had the chance to watch a team from Nunavut compete, pretty cool to see multiple northern territories represented on the national stage!
🔥 HAY RIVER HEAT | DAWSON CITY
The Hay River Heat Men’s Fastball Team also hit the road in August, heading west to Dawson City, Yukon for an awesome weekend of fastball!
We love seeing our northern teams travelling, competing and connecting with other ball communities across the North.
🥎YELLOWKNIFE MERCHANTS | SASKATOON
The Yellowknife Merchants made their way to Saskatoon for the 2026 Softball Canada Men’s Fast Pitch National Championship, representing the NWT against some of the best teams in Canada.
It has been years since the NWT has sent a men’s team to this championship, and we couldn’t be prouder of the Merchants for putting in the work this season and bringing the North back to the national stage!
🇨🇦 FROM THE NWT TO TEAM ALBERTA
Some exciting news from July! Former Yellowknifer and current Saints player, Dana Gard-Sweeney was named Manager of the Team Alberta Women’s C Slo-Pitch Team for the 2027 USSSA Challenge Cup in Florida!
Dana will be responsible for selecting the roster, coordinating sponsorship and fundraising, and managing the team and game-time decisions as they prepare to compete in Florida in January 2027.
🥎 ANOTHER NORTHERN SEASON IN THE BOOKS
Across the territories, slo-pitch and fastball leagues have officially wrapped up another season. From minor ball to adult leagues, tournaments, volunteers, coaches, officials and everyone who stepped onto a diamond this summer. Thank you for keeping softball alive and thriving across the North.
🔥 BUT WE’RE NOT QUITE DONE YET…
This weekend, the NWT heads back to Leduc with TWO teams competing at the Men’s and Women’s Slo-Pitch National Championships!
On the men’s side, players from Behchokǫ̀, Fort Resolution, Whati, Dettah, Yellowknife and Edmonton will represent the North.
On the women’s side, the NWT/AB Saints will look to keep their dominant season rolling and make some noise on the national stage. Catch their games live on their page; Saints Women's Slo-pitch

We’ve always said blue looks good on the ball diamond!
A huge shoutout to the members of the Inuvik RCMP Detachment who are spending two nights a week this summer coaching local softball teams.
Giving their time, sharing the game and building connections with youth in their community, this is what growing softball in the North looks like.

NWT Softball proudly celebrates one of our own, Paul Gard, on his induction into the Sport North Hall of Fame.
For decades, Paul has been a player, coach, mentor, builder, and leader within softball in the Northwest Territories. From competing at national championships in the 1970s and 80s, to representing the North internationally at World Masters Games, his accomplishments on the field are remarkable but his impact off the field may be even greater.
Paul helped build a culture of northern softball rooted in pride, friendship, competition, and community. The relationships built on the diamonds of Yellowknife carried through generations, creating lifelong teammates, friendships, and families connected through the game.
His passion for softball helped inspire countless athletes across the North.
Thank you, Paul, for everything you have given to the game, the community, and the Northwest Territories.
Thank you to Sport North for hosting such a great night!
