🎮 Toxicity in esports is real. But how can we tackle it?

As part of our interview series recorded during the ENHANCE Project Meeting in Limassol, Cyprus, we are pleased to introduce Achilleas Achilleos from Frederick University, Cyprus, who shares his perspective on the importance of addressing toxicity in esports and online gaming communities.

In this interview, Achilleas highlights one of the most important challenges facing the esports community today: toxic behaviour in online gaming environments.

According to Achilleas, ENHANCE aims to raise awareness among young gamers, esports players, parents and educators about the social risks that can emerge when playing online games, particularly in competitive and professional settings.

The project seeks not only to help players recognise and deal with toxic behaviours, but also to provide the knowledge and tools needed to overcome their impact in real life and promote healthier online interactions.

💬 “It is important to make young players aware of the different problems they may face when playing online games, especially at a professional level.”

Through research, education and awareness-raising activities, ENHANCE is working to foster a safer, healthier and more inclusive esports culture across Europe.

🎮🇨🇾 As part of our interview series recorded during the ENHANCE Project Meeting in Limassol, we are pleased to introduce Dr. Dimitrios Kolyperas, Research Associate at the University of Patras and partner of the project.

In this interview, Dr. Kolyperas highlights some of the key challenges facing online gaming communities today. While gaming offers opportunities for connection, interaction and personal growth for millions of young people, it can also expose players to issues such as toxic behaviour, abusive communication, discrimination and sexism.

As a rapidly evolving digital environment, gaming requires greater awareness and a stronger focus on the social experiences of players. This is why ENHANCE is working to promote a deeper understanding of both the opportunities and risks associated with esports, helping to create safer, healthier and more inclusive online communities.

🎥 Watch the interview and discover how education, awareness-raising and good practices can contribute to a more positive gaming experience for young people across Europe.

🎮🇨🇾 After three intensive days of work in Limassol, we are excited to share the first interview recorded during the ENHANCE Project Meeting.

We begin with Marc Sarens, Project Coordinator from Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB), who introduces the ENHANCE project and explains why understanding the social side of esports is more important than ever.

Millions of young people spend time in online gaming communities every day. While esports can foster friendship, inclusion and personal development, they can also expose players to toxic behaviours, discrimination and online abuse.

Through research, education and awareness-raising activities, ENHANCE aims to help create safer, healthier and more inclusive gaming environments for young people across Europe.

🎥 In this interview, Marc shares his perspective on the project's mission, its expected impact and the one word he believes best represents ENHANCE.

What word would you choose to describe the future of esports? 🫆

🇨🇾 Three productive days in Limassol for the ENHANCE Project Meeting & MOOC Training Session!

From 27–29 May 2026, project partners gathered at Frederick University in Cyprus to review progress, exchange expertise and shape the next phase of the ENHANCE project.

Throughout the meeting, we worked intensively on the development and refinement of our two MOOCs:
🎮 MOOC 1 – Esports Players
👨‍👩‍👧 MOOC 2 – Parents & Guardians

Together with project partners and external expert mentors, we reviewed all ten training modules, discussed content, collected valuable feedback and identified improvements to ensure the MOOCs provide high-quality, practical and engaging learning experiences.

The final day focused on planning the upcoming pilot phase, defining implementation timelines, discussing survey tools and impact assessment activities, and coordinating the next project management and dissemination steps.

Beyond the working sessions, the meeting was also an important opportunity to strengthen collaboration, share perspectives and reinforce our common commitment to promoting safer, more inclusive and socially responsible gaming communities across Europe.

A big thank you to Frederick University and Dr. Achilleas Achilleos for hosting this productive and inspiring meeting.

Stay tuned – the next phase of ENHANCE is about to begin! 🚀
