The little life of the reef.

Most of the time they go pretty unnoticed but looking at them through the right lens you start to notice all the details that make them so amazing, like those fiery eyes, the rough texture of their body and the parts your naked eye wouldn’t be able to see otherwise.

Water temperature here rarely justifies a drysuit on its own — the Canaries sit at 18–24°C most of the year. What actually tips the decision is dive duration, profile, and how your own body handles the cold, because that’s different for everyone. Short recreational dives in summer, wetsuit all day. Long deco stops, CCR dives, or you just run cold — drysuit every time.

Back in Fuerteventura for a couple of dives and it did not disappoint. El Faro and Bajón del Río are still two of my favourite sites out there — mushroom-shaped volcanic crags rising off the sand, cracks and overhangs carved into the rock, stingrays gliding over the sand, and that current keeping everything honest. Good to be back in this water.

Broke down what’s actually going on inside the Symbios CCR I dive. Hybrid O₂ sensing, a chest-mounted BOV, and a scrubber that doesn’t fight you on work of breathing. It’s not the only rebreather worth diving — it’s the one that made sense for how I dive.

Recently I’ve gained a new appreciation for the shallow reefs. There is so much going on if you pay attention and when the algae are in full bloom it looks like a garden full of flowers.

Most divers think a rescue course is about learning to save someone else. It isn’t — it starts with managing yourself, because a diver who can’t handle their own stress is no use to anyone. From there it’s reading panic before it escalates, running a proper missing diver search, and getting an unresponsive diver out of the water and breathing. It’s the course that changes how you dive, not just what you’re capable of doing.

Bailout and stage regulators aren’t where you save money. They sit unused until the dive they matter most—and if you’ve bought cheap, that’s when they’ll fail. Cold water, depth, exertion: premium regs are engineered for exactly these conditions. Cheap alternatives cut corners on seals, cracking pressure, and build quality. Your breathing gas is your life support. Spend the money.

Most divers know their CNS % — fewer track OTU. They’re driven by the same thing (elevated PPO2) but behave completely differently: CNS builds fast and causes convulsions, OTU builds slowly and affects your lungs over hours and days. On CCR, especially over multi-day trips, OTU can quietly approach its limit while CNS looks fine. Know both numbers, not just one.

Ask an experienced diver what they’d do differently and most say the same thing: slow down on the fundamentals. Buoyancy, trim, valve drills — skills that get ticked off early and rarely revisited. But they’re what everything after them is built on. Skip past them too fast and the gap doesn’t disappear, it just resurfaces later, in a course where you can least afford it.
