I can’t believe how quickly I’ve lost strength.

After 2 months of summer loving, less yoga practice and fewer gym sessions, I can really feel the difference. WOW, where have my L-sits gone?? Where is my hip flexor strength? And whose are these jelly arms?

So I’m back to the beginning (well, not quite, but it feels like that at the moment).

I’m going back to the strength-building yoga drills and practices that made L-sits, handstands and arm balances possible in the first place.

I’ve created a little series of 30-minute practices that I’m going to use myself, and I thought some of you might want to join me.

The first one is full-body strength. We work shoulders, wrists, core and compression, hip flexors, quads and glutes.

Take the options, rest when you need to. We’re not trying to prove anything.

Let’s get strong together.

Comment STRONGER and I’ll send you the first practice 🤍

The longer you practise and teach yoga, the more you realize how much there still is to learn, sometimes it can feel overwhelming.

These are some of the books I’ve collected over the years that I keep coming back to over and over. This isn’t meant to be a definitive list. It’s a collection of books that have helped me explore yoga beyond simply practising asana and there are plenty more I could have included.

I never actually bought a copy of the Yoga Sutras. I listened to a commentary on YouTube instead. There is so much incredible teaching available online if you want to go deeper into yoga philosophy and its traditions. You can study Vedanta, explore the Upanishads, listen to commentaries on the Sutras, or even follow entire courses on the Bhagavad Gita. Books are brilliant, but they’re definitely not the only way to keep learning.

If you’re a yoga teacher, training to teach, or simply serious about your practice, save this for the next time you’re looking for something to read. And add any others you recommend in the comments below 👇❤️

And share it with your yoga people 🤍

What’s one yoga book you think should be on everyone’s shelf?

Why change the position of the back leg in Deer Pose?

With the back ankle down, the floor supports the leg, so the muscles around the hip don’t need to work as hard to actively hold the position. You can focus more on the mobility and stretch.

Keep the knee down but lift the ankle and you remove some of that support. The back hip is internally rotated, so the gluteus medius and minimus, adductors and deeper hip rotators have to work to maintain that rotation and control the position of the femur.

Lift the whole back leg and the demand changes again. With no contact with the floor, the muscles around the hip and pelvis have to control the position of the entire leg.

The variation you choose depends on what you’re trying to explore.

Sometimes you want support so you can focus on the stretch. Sometimes you want to challenge your ability to actively control the range.

It isn’t always about going deeper. It’s about understanding why you’re changing the position and what you’re asking the body to do.

I’ve just released a new 40 minute YouTube class dedicated to hip opening and mobility. It’s not my usual flow style. It is purely getting into the hips, perfect if you are tight and hold a lot of tension.

Comment Hips and I will send you the link to the class (well I will try 🤣 I’m going to try do the Manychat automated thing. Wish my luck my technology skills are a work in progress)

I’ve been working on this transition for years but there’s only a short window in the month when my body feels open enough to even attempt it 😂
The more you practise something, the more the fear starts to disappear. But because I’ve never been particularly consistent with this one, even after about 8 years, there’s still a fair amount of apprehension when I get to the drop.

I’m definitely feeling more in control of it now, though. That point just before I drop is stronger, less of a cross your fingers and hope not to die scenario and more of a controlled drop into the unknown.

My dream is still to get the tic toc walkover 🤸‍♀️

So I’ll keep working on it.

What’s something you’ve been practising for years that you still haven’t quite mastered?

There’s so much more available to us when we stop putting limits on what we think we can do.

I never would have imagined that I’d one day be pressing into handstands and moving into King Dancer. When I started yoga, I wasn’t a gymnast and I certainly wasn’t naturally flexible.

But yoga has given me so much more than a strong body and the ability to make beautiful shapes with it. It’s given me a stronger mind, a way to come back to myself, and the ability to handle the chaos of life with a little more space.

And with four kids believe me there is a lot of chaos 🥵😂

If you’re curious about where your own practice could take you, follow along. You can practise full classes with me over on YouTube.

Headstand pike presses are one of the most powerful drills for building real inversion strength.

They train much more than your abs.

This movement develops:

• deep core activation
• hip flexor compression
• spinal control
• slow strength through range

Exactly the kind of strength you need for:

– press handstands
– controlled headstand entries
– L-sits and compression work

Tips if you’re practicing this:

Move slowly.
Keep the legs active and together.
Think about lifting the hips before the legs.
Exhale as the legs rise.

Control will always build more strength than momentum.
