Ashford U12s v Dover RFC

A great morning of junior rugby on Sunday as Ashford U12s took on Dover RFC in an entertaining and competitive 40 minutes.

Ashford produced a convincing performance, playing with real intent from the start. Particularly pleasing was the boys’ desire to attack, move the ball through the hands and bring teammates into the game. There were some excellent passages of rugby, with good support play and plenty of willingness to pass rather than simply take the ball into contact.

Thomas, Harrison, Isaac, Adam and Esbern were among the Ashford try scorers, but this was very much a team performance, with contributions throughout the squad.

A special mention too for Oliver and Freddie, who made their Ashford debuts. Both fitted straight into the side and represented the club brilliantly – welcome to the Ashford rugby family!💛❤️🖤

Huge credit must also go to Dover. They competed hard for the full 40 minutes, never stopped playing and were rewarded with three well-worked tries of their own.

Most importantly, the game was played in the right spirit, with both teams demonstrating the values we want to see in junior rugby: respect, teamwork, effort and enjoyment.

Well done to everyone involved, and thank you to Dover for a great game of junior rugby.

A really valuable development friendly away at Gravesend today, and delighted that we were able to take 28 boys, including a number who have had very limited match rugby so far.

The plan was to play three thirds: development, mixed and then a stronger final third. We certainly committed to the development part of that plan, and the opening third was a tough one. Gravesend had some very big, physical players, but our boys kept competing, kept tackling and never gave up.

The second and third thirds were a very different story. Bringing in some of the boys who played in last week’s league game seemed to give everyone that little bit of belief and confidence, and it quickly ran through the whole team. Some really good rugby followed, with the opportunity to try boys in different positions and give plenty of players experience against strong opposition.

It was also another reminder of the journey this group has been on. Promotion followed by promotion means we’re now only one division behind Gravesend. These are the sorts of teams we should be testing ourselves against and this is the level of competition we increasingly belong at.

Most importantly, 28 boys got meaningful game time today. Giving everyone opportunities to play and develop is something we’re really proud of and something we’ll continue to do.

Thanks as well to Ollie for stepping in to ref part of the game, despite her troublesome knees!

A few bumps and bruises along the way, and unfortunately a break for Connor on his debut. Really tough luck, fingers crossed he has a speedy recovery and we see him back with the boys soon.

Onto next week and back to league rugby at home against Blackheath. 🏉

Each squad reflects the hard work shown on training nights, the support of teammates, coaches and families, and the pride that comes with representing our community.

Match Report | Under 14 Boys v Folkestone

Finally underway! 🏉

After what felt like an endless pre-season - bone-hard brown pitches, more dust than grass, limited contact and no friendlies – the Warriors’ U14 season finally kicked off today.

And straight into it: league rugby away to local rivals Folkestone.

After two promotions last season, the boys are now in Division 4 and they’ve worked really hard through pre-season. Core skills, new strike moves, adapting to 15-a-side, lineouts… lots to work on, but more than anything they were desperate to get back to some proper rugby.

Selection was tough. So many boys put their hands up, and those who missed out pushed the 20 selected really hard. And today they were unleashed.

From the kick-off they ran hard and straight or on their J-lines! And when they didn’t have the ball, they hit and tackled even harder.

Two converted tries by half-time told only half the story. By the final whistle it was four converted tries to one and, in truth, it could probably have been more.

Austin finished all four tries, some effort, but they were all team tries, built on the work happening around him. That probably summed up the whole performance. No player of the match today either. It just didn’t feel right to single anyone out after such a strong team effort.

For a first game back, away from home, in a league fixture against a local rival, we really couldn’t have asked for much more. And Folkestone feels like a fitting place to start the U14 journey.

It was here in pre-season last year, as U13s, that we found ourselves at our lowest. We came away from that day knowing we needed to change how we wanted to play. From there came the game plans and elite behaviours that have helped take this group onwards and upwards. The players bought into it, and today felt like the start of the next chapter.

Next up is a friendly against Gravesend, where we’ll get the whole squad involved. Then, in two weeks’ time, we welcome Blackheath to Ashford, the oldest open rugby club in the world.

A pretty good reminder of how far these boys have come. Exciting to see where the U14 journey takes us.

What an amazing evening at Lordswood RFC, for the 2025/26 Kent County RFU Volunteer Awards, recognising three of our very dedicated volunteers!

A huge congratulations and well done to Aran Sage who was awarded the Junior Rugby Volunteer Award, Izzi Cole for receiving the Young Persons Volunteer Award, and Tony Wood for being nominated as Volunteer of the Year!

What an achievement for all three of you!
