Back to school… and back to adventure! 🌊

The school gates are open, the uniforms are on and children are officially back in the classroom! 📚😅

But while the summer holidays might be over, we’re only just getting started! 🙌

We’re looking forward to welcoming lots of school groups to Skern Adventure over the rest of the year, ready for days filled with adventure, outdoor learning, teamwork, challenges and plenty of laughter! We can’t wait to see our centre buzzing with school groups again 💙

That’s a wrap on summer at Skern Adventure! 💙

What a summer it’s been! We’ve absolutely loved welcoming so many of you through our doors over the summer holidays...

We’ve had an action-packed few weeks filled with HAF sessions, Adventure Club days, swimming pool sessions, camping & pod stays, and lots of other adventures, laughs and memories along the way! 🎉

🎉 50 years of adventure, people and unforgettable memories!

Over the Bank Holiday weekend, we welcomed generations of the Skern family back to Skern Adventure Appledore to celebrate a very special milestone — our 50th anniversary.

From those who helped shape Skern in its early days to the team delivering adventures today, it was fantastic to bring so many people together to reconnect, reminisce and celebrate five decades of adventure in North Devon.

Some travelled from as far as Skye and France to join us for a day of activities, food, live music and, of course, birthday cake! 🎂

We started life as Skern Lodge, and 50 years later we’re proud to have rebranded as Skern Adventure, with two adventure centres in North Devon — Skern Adventure Appledore and Skern Adventure Abbotsham.

Along the way, we’ve also expanded into training and apprenticeships through Skern Skills, supporting learners and businesses across the UK.

While a lot has changed over five decades, one thing has remained constant: our people and our belief in the power of adventure to help people learn, grow and achieve more.

A huge thank you to everyone who has been part of the Skern story over the past 50 years — our staff, past and present, our visitors, customers, partners and the wider North Devon community.

Our assault course has been putting young people through their paces since Skern first opened its doors! 🙌

Over the years, a few things have changed… some of the obstacles have had a refresh and we've definitely been better at mowing the grass! 🤣

But one thing has never changed: the determination to complete each obstacle, the encouragement from teammates, and the sense of achievement when you've conquered the course 💪

We were incredibly sorry to hear the news that Calvert Devon will be closing its doors after more than 30 years of providing inclusive outdoor experiences. For three decades, their team has helped make adventure accessible to people of all abilities, giving so many young people the opportunity to experience the outdoors.

Their contribution to outdoor learning in Devon deserves enormous recognition. Over the years, we’ve shared staff and expertise with Calvert Devon, and that connection makes this news particularly sad for us. Their legacy deserves to be recognised properly; few organisations have done as much for inclusive adventure in our region.

We also know the closure may leave some schools, groups and organisations with residential visits or outdoor experiences that now need to be reconsidered. If that's you, please get in touch. We'd genuinely like to help — whether that's talking through options, seeing what we can offer, or just being a sounding board while you work out next steps.

🎓 GCSE Results Day!

Results are important, but they’re only one measure of what a young person can achieve. We’re lucky to see young people surprise themselves every day at Skern Adventure – tackling something new, growing in confidence, working as a team and discovering just how capable they really are.

So, to everyone receiving their GCSE results today: be proud of what you’ve achieved, believe in what you’re capable of, and look forward to what comes next. 🌊

We had an absolute blast taking to the streets yesterday at Appledore Carnival on our Skern Adventure float! 🌊🧗‍♀️

We brought a little bit of Skern to the carnival, with rafting, surfing, kayaking, archery, climbing and zip lining all making an appearance! 🛶🏄‍♀️🧗‍♂️

And we’re pretty chuffed to have picked up 3rd place in the Local Business category! 🥉 🎉

A huge shoutout and thank you to the Appledore Pirates for putting on a brilliant event and making it such a fun day for the whole community. 🏴‍☠️❤️

The team had an absolute blast - now we just need to work out how we’re going to make next year’s float even bigger… 👀

Over the years, groups have climbed aboard a raft with one shared goal – to work together and paddle their way along the River Torridge 🚣‍♂️

From plenty of laughter, games and splashes, to the occasional paddle going in the wrong direction, every rafting session has been an adventure and a chance to discover what can be achieved when everyone pulls together! 🙌

The rafts may have slightly changed over the years, but the teamwork, determination and unforgettable memories have remained the same. 💙
