Squats and horse pose (wide-legged squats) are highly effective exercises for pregnancy and labour preparation. Utilising a wall and if you wish a birth ball adds essential stability, reduces joint strain, and supports proper alignment.

Pregnancy Benefits

• Relieves Lower Back and Pelvic Pain: Placing a birthing ball between your lower back and the wall provides spinal support.
• Builds Lower Body Endurance: These positions strengthen the quadriceps, glutes, and core. This builds the stamina needed to hold active, upright birthing positions.
• Improves Pelvic Floor Elasticity: Deep or wide-set stances help stretch and strengthen the pelvic floor muscles safely. This prepares them to yield during delivery.
• Corrects Posture: The wall prevents you from leaning too far forward as your belly grows, keeping your weight aligned and reducing the typical “pregnancy waddle”.

Birthing & Labour Benefits

• Maximises Pelvic Outlet Space: Squatting and horse pose open the pelvic inlet and expand the pelvic outlet diameter by up to 2–3 cm. This gives the baby more room to turn and descend.
• Leverages Mechanical and Gravity Advantage: Remaining upright encourages the baby to drop effectively into the birth canal. This can significantly shorten the duration of the first and second stages of labour.
• Reduces Labour Pain and Interventions: Supported squatting relaxes the birth canal. This lowers overall pain perception, reduces the necessity for assisted delivery tools (like forceps), and decreases the risk of severe perineal tearing.
• Conserves Energy: Leaning against a wall or resting your weight into a ball during a squat minimises maternal fatigue. This keeps you physically supported so you don’t exhaust your legs before the pushing phase. www.yogaforallherts.com

Happy Autumn Equinox

Today is a moment of balance — when day and night are almost equal, reminding us to find our own balance too.

And where better to explore balance than on our yoga mats? 🧘‍♀️

Balance between:
- Self-care and caring for others
-Rest and movement
-Doing and simply being
-Strength and softness
-Holding on and letting go
-Work, play and time in nature
And humans and puppies at yoga! Herbie did so well at his first Accessible Yoga and Beach Yoga
