💪 STRENGTH: The Most Misused Word in Fitness

Everyone wants to get stronger. But strength isn’t just muscle.

Strength is your ability to produce high levels of force against a heavy load. While muscle size matters, early strength gains are mostly driven by your nervous system becoming better at recruiting muscle fibres and coordinating movement.

That’s why beginners often get much stronger before they look noticeably bigger.

🧠 Your nervous system acts like a set of safety brakes. It constantly asks:

• Is this safe?
• Is this worth the energy cost?

Strength training gradually teaches your body that producing more force is both safe and necessary.

🏋️ Over time, muscle growth contributes too. More muscle + better neural efficiency = more strength.

🔄 Researchers have even observed strength increases in untrained limbs when only one side is trained, highlighting just how important neural adaptations are.

🏆 What does strength training generally look like?

• Low reps (≤5)
• Heavy loads
• Mostly submaximal effort (~2 reps in reserve)
• Compound lifts often work best

Strength is a skill. Practice matters.

💥 Strength vs Hypertrophy

Strength training is optimised for force production.

Hypertrophy training is optimised for muscle growth.

Both build muscle and strength, they simply emphasise different adaptations.

🚫 Constantly training to failure isn’t ideal for strength development. Most of the year should be spent accumulating quality reps, managing fatigue, and refining technique.

📈 The takeaway:

Strength isn’t just muscle mass.

It’s your nervous system, technique, muscle size, and ability to express force efficiently.

Getting stronger is the long-term process of teaching your body:

“This is safe.”
“This is necessary.”
“Adapt accordingly.”

You don’t need to stay perfectly upright to squat “correctly.” 👀

One of the biggest mistakes beginners make is trying to force a completely vertical torso because they’ve been told leaning forward is wrong, or it doesn’t feel right when they do it. But the truth is, some forward lean is completely normal, and for most people, necessary.

Your squat will depend on:

• Hip & ankle mobility
• Your anatomy (limb proportions, hip socket depth, etc)
• Your biomechanics
• Injury history

There’s no one-size-fits-all squat technique.
In this reel, I break down why leaning forward in your squat might actually be the right thing for YOUR body.

We’ve been in this game for a collective 30ish years now (wowzers!), and we’ve learned a helluva lot since starting out.

Trial and error, formal higher education, informal learning, client coaching, and our own curiosity means we have amassed so much knowledge around training and our approach to exercise.

If we could go back in time, this is what we’d tell ourselves… this and the winning lotto numbers 😆

It’s not by accident that Dynamo Gym is inclusive, supportive, and safe for everyone who sets foot inside it, it’s by design. We work hard to keep it this way, so when our members comment on how good they feel because of how our space works, it means so so much to us.

What our members say about us:

“Dynamo is a wonderfully inclusive and safe space. The attention to detail, passion and genuine care that goes into training here is so rare to see, and is evident in them winning the awards they do. I have come to Ben for advice in training, nutrition and rehabilitation for many years and will continue to for many years to come!”

If you’re curious about training in a different kind of gym drop us a DM or go to our website to get in touch, we’ll take it from there! ✌️🧡

I often say one of our biggest selling points is our members. Because at the end of the day, our members are a huge part of what makes Dynamo Gym what it is. Without them, it’s just two rooms full of equipment 😅

So many people come to the gym carrying past experiences; feeling intimidated, comparing themselves to others, or just getting completely overwhelmed.

If you’re worried that walking into our gym might feel the same… that’s valid. But here’s what matters: every single person you see here started exactly where you are. They remember what it felt like to be new, uncertain, out of place, and that’s why they go out of their way to make others feel welcome.

We see it every day:
people cheering each other on,
sharing advice,
building real friendships,
celebrating progress - big and small,
and lifting each other up (in every sense of the word).

As much as we always hoped to build something like this, the sense of community and compassion here isn’t forced, it’s grown naturally from a shared mindset of support, respect, and connection.

Honestly, sometimes we have to pinch ourselves. We’ve got such a great bunch of people here. I’m always saying how lucky we are… but our members are quick to remind me: “you’re not lucky, you created this.”

And maybe they’re right. From day one, Dynamo Gym was built to be more than just a place to train.
