The original plan didn’t happen.
The plan was to load up the kayaks, head 30 miles out, dump the yaks over the side, and target some blues and porgies.
The wind had other plans—it was a real 50/50 toss-up. With the weather forecast predicted to drop, we decided to let the chum do its magic and assess the situation after an hour. In true British fashion, the weather didn't hold true to the reports… it just got worse. Nevertheless, we plowed on with fishing from the boat. A porgie and a couple of blues, and then right at the death, I managed a 110 lb blue. Day saved, but still a little sore that we couldn’t do what we originally set out to do: some of the most extreme kayak fishing possible.
Still had a great day with some great people

Weekend Fishing Report
What a weekend! I flew down to Oxwich on Friday evening for a quick practice before the big event on Saturday. I managed to catch some fresh bait and landed a tope and a thornback—a good sign after last week’s visit. Beers and a bbq followed after I intruded on some friends who were staying at Three Cliffs campsite.
Saturday
The day started well; I woke up to a sunrise and a stunning view. I made a quick trip back to Oxwich to set up and get fishing. I caught a scad on the feathers first, then moved on to dogfish and a gurnard. There was a little wait for my first tope run, which I missed; it was just a short run before the fish spat the bait. It happens now and again, and although I tried to persevere, it wasn't meant to be.
I headed for the reef where I know congers and huss hang out. I landed two congers in quick succession before making a random cast to my left, where I hooked into the bream. That was it—I just needed a bass to complete the trio. I headed towards the kelp and used a lure to tempt a bass out of the cover. Time was ticking at this point, and everyone else had left the wreck, so I tried to pull one more species out, but all I managed was an undersized pouting. It turns out that would have won it for me, so well done to Nathan for taking the top spot, and to Ed and the team for another great event.
Over the moon finishing second, my highest finish to date.
After the event, I had to shoot off from Oxwich to join my brother at the Rum and Reggae event in Bristol. I was worried I wouldn't make it, and sure enough, I missed the final entry time, but the bouncers were kind enough to let me in anyway.
Sunday
I took a trip to Torbay to hunt for octopus. Conditions were far from ideal, but we got the job done—five octopus located in a small bay, with three in the box for a trip of a lifetime on Tuesday.

A proper scorcher at Oxwich today. ☀️ The conditions were absolute perfection, though the trade-off for that glass-calm water was The lack of fish.
The usual suspects—mackerel, scad, bream, and dabs—were nowhere to be found, and even the dogfish were unusually thin on the ground. A move out to some deeper water was needed, first drop… tope on!!! A solid scrap from start to finish. Nearly lost a digit. 🤚
After that nothing, hours went by still nothing.
Just when I was about to call it, I had a gurnard
Had a great day on the water on some crazy conditions🎣💪

Cod on Ron !
Check out that eye!
The thornback ray eye has to be one of my favourite to look at of all the fish species found in the uk.
Tope on !!

What a day on the water! Yesterday turned into an absolute session—6 Tope to the boat. While most were solid, scrappy 25-pounders, I managed to hook into a couple that were pushing that magical 50lb mark!
The dogfish were out in force, which meant keeping the baits off the bottom was essential. That made the takes absolutely epic; the rod just hooped over and it was game on! The kayak was swinging in every direction—even those smaller fish are a serious handful.
Other than the tope, I managed to scratch up a few fresh mackerel for bait, added a smooth hound to the tally, and dealt with what felt like a thousand dogfish. Great day !!
