COBBY HIT EIGHT IN SEASON OPENER AS JJ FINALLY REMEMBERS WHERE THE GOAL IS

Cobby FC Veterans 8-0 Denaby United Vets
The new Wragg League veterans season kicked off on a pitch that looked less like a football field and more like an ambitious potato farming project from the mid-1980s. If you'd told spectators there were plans to harvest a few tonnes of Maris Piper at full-time, nobody would have questioned it.

Pre-match, there was a genuine sense that this could be a banana skin. Not because of Denaby United Vets, who deserve huge credit for battling throughout, but because the playing surface was such a great leveller that anything could happen. Thankfully for Cobby, anything that happened largely involved the ball ending up in the Denaby net.

From the first whistle, Cobby burst out of the traps like Trap 4 at Doncaster Dogs, chasing the plastic hare with reckless enthusiasm and knees that definitely won't feel the same on Monday morning.
With star striker Kirk Bradshaw sidelined through injury and new attacking sensation James Munson absent after making the questionable life choice of running the Great North Run ("Why would anybody voluntarily do that?"), the rest of the squad stepped up magnificently.

Watching it all unfold on the touchline was player-manager Adam Cunningham, sporting a grin wider than the Grinch on Christmas Eve as he witnessed an opening-day demolition job.
The scoring spree started early and never really stopped.

GOAL OF THE DAY CONTENDERS EVERYWHERE
Andy "Tommo" Thompson bagged a brace, but it was his second that had spectators rubbing their eyes in disbelief. Collecting the ball in the box, he proceeded to glide past defenders and the goalkeeper with all the grace of a prime Swan Lake dancer. As Tommo pirouetted through, Denaby defenders fell around him like tragic swans reaching the emotional finale of a theatre production. Think Özil against Ludogorets... but with more creaking joints and less Champions League money.

Jerome "0% Body Fat" Campbell then unleashed what can only be described as a missile. Spotting the target from around 20 yards, he absolutely rocketed an effort into the bottom corner. The goalkeeper didn't dive as much as simply admire it.
Then came one of the day's feel-good moments.

Defender Ant "Synthetic Testosterone" Simpson somehow found himself in enemy territory, a place rarely visited in his footballing career. After applying a finish that suggested he'd accidentally wandered into the wrong position, he celebrated with his two children on the sidelines. One could be heard shouting, "I'm so proud of you Daddy!"
There wasn't a dry eye in the house.

Mostly because everyone was laughing at the sight of Ant so far up the pitch that he nearly needed an oxygen mask and a map to find his way back to defensive midfield.

JJ SHOCKS WORLD FOOTBALL
The biggest story of the afternoon, however, belonged to Jordan "JJ" Wilson.
Not only did he score.
He scored twice.
Yes, twice.
Statisticians are already reviewing decades of data after JJ found the net for the first time since his 13th birthday party, when everyone traditionally lets you score because "it's your special day."
Two goals in one match has led to an official investigation from league authorities, while eyewitnesses confirmed teammates immediately began checking for signs of an eclipse.
Completing the rout were goals from Joe "Thunderbolt" Morley and Reece "Baby Giraffe" Johnstone, the latter moving with his customary blend of enthusiasm, unpredictability and limbs that seem to arrive at locations several seconds before the rest of him and the opposition.

THE SUBSTITUTION THAT STOLE THE SHOW
The loudest laugh of the afternoon may have arrived when substitute Ash Hill entered the action.
The new defensive signing's freshly dyed jet-black hair caught everyone's attention immediately. As he jogged onto the field, the consensus among spectators was that he'd somehow wandered onto the set of a Just For Men television advert.
To be fair to Ash, if the dye helps him feel 25 again, who are we to judge?
Although the repeated cries of "Who's the new w*anker?" from the sidelines probably didn't help. and that was from the Cobby subs bench!!

EIGHT GOALS, TWO IDENTICAL HALVES
Remarkably, both periods finished 4-0, giving the game a satisfyingly symmetrical 8-0 final scoreline.
Denaby United Vets deserve plenty of credit for never throwing in the towel despite a difficult afternoon and conditions that made quality football a challenge. On another day, that pitch could have caused all sorts of problems and was always likely to act as a leveller.
But not today.
Today belonged entirely to Cobby.
An opening-day performance packed with goals, laughter, teamwork and enough memorable moments to fill clubhouse conversations for weeks.

FULL-TIME

Cobby FC Veterans 8-0 Denaby United Vets

Scorers:
• Andy 'Tommo' Thompson (2)
• Jordan "JJ" Wilson (2)
• Jerome "0% Body Fat" Campbell (1)

• Reece "Baby Giraffe" Johnstone (1)

LOOKING AHEAD

Next up for Cobby is a home fixture against league newcomers Armthorpe Vets at the famous Stade de Brookfield in Chesterfield.
If this opening-day display is anything to go by, it's one not to miss.
Come along and support the boys.
And afterwards?
There's always a pint waiting in the boozer.

RESERVES EARN THEIR FIRST POINT

Chesterfield Club Reserves picked up their first point of the season following a hard-fought 1-1 draw with Tibshelf Community Reserves at Highfield Park.

Club started brightly and settled into the game from the first whistle. The opening 45 minutes proved to be an evenly contested affair, with clear-cut chances at a premium as both sides worked hard without being able to find the breakthrough.

When Tibshelf did threaten, Cory Lockett was on hand to produce an excellent point-blank save from a corner to keep the scores level.

Unfortunately, just as it looked as though the sides would head into the break goalless, a few mistakes from Club allowed Tibshelf to break through in first-half stoppage time and take a 1-0 lead into the interval.

A few words of encouragement from the gaffer at half-time got the response he was looking for, with Club coming back out determined to get themselves into the game.

They were handed an early let-off, however. A perfectly weighted lob beat Lockett and looked destined for the net, only for a Tibshelf player in an offside position to apply the final touch virtually on the goal line. The flag went up and Club remained just one behind.

That proved to be the wake-up call.

Some good football down the right eventually saw Luke Hoskin play an excellent pass into Taylor Hoole, who was clipped as he looked to make something happen inside the area.

Penalty Club.

Up stepped Frankie Wigley, who kept his composure and converted from the spot to make it 1-1 on 60 minutes.

In doing so, Frankie wrote his name into the club's early history as the first-ever league goalscorer for Chesterfield Club Reserves. ⚽

Tibshelf responded strongly and began to apply pressure in search of a winner. A couple more excellent saves from Lockett, combined with some determined last-ditch defending, kept Club level.

There were opportunities at the other end too. Club created chances to sn**ch a second goal of their own but couldn't quite find the finishing touch.

The final whistle brought an end to a competitive contest:

Chesterfield Club Reserves 1-1 Tibshelf Community Reserves

Plenty of positives for Club to take from the performance. They responded well to going behind, showed plenty of character in the second half and had opportunities to take all three points.

⚽ Goalscorer: Frankie Wigley (P) 60'
⭐ Man of the Match: Charlie Truswell

A good point on the board and another piece of Chesterfield Club history made along the way.

FIRST LEAGUE WIN FOR CLUB!

Rose & Crown KR 2–5 Chesterfield Club

Matchday two took Chesterfield Club to Holmebrook Valley Park to face Rose & Crown KR, with a strong squad looking to put right the mistakes from the opening game of the season.

Club couldn't have asked for a better start. With just two minutes played, Danny Arnold slid a perfectly weighted ball through to Muney Paradzayi, who made no mistake with the finish to give Club an early 1–0 lead.

Despite not quite finding our full rhythm, Club began to take control. On 13 minutes, the dangerous Arnold was involved again, producing a pinpoint pass for Leighton Mycroft, who raced through and rifled his finish beyond the advancing goalkeeper.

Things became more difficult when Josh Raine, playing in an unfamiliar full-back role, was harshly sin-binned following a challenge. Down to ten temporarily, Club refused to let it change the pattern of the game.

The third arrived soon afterwards. A jinking run from Muney created the opening for Mycroft, who grabbed his second of the afternoon to make it 3–0.

Club remained in control for the remainder of the half. Aaron Smith dealt confidently with anything that came his way, while at the other end the Rose & Crown keeper produced several good stops to prevent the lead growing further.

HT: Rose & Crown KR 0–3 Chesterfield Club

The second half started exactly how Club wanted.

Just two minutes after the restart, Mycroft turned provider, releasing Muney to score his second of the game and make it 4–0.

Two minutes later, Mycroft was involved yet again. His pass released Arnold, who calmly finished past the goalkeeper for a thoroughly deserved goal after an industrious performance.

49 minutes: 5–0 Club.

With the result seemingly under control, substitutions and changes disrupted Club's rhythm and the hosts began to enjoy their best spell.

Rose & Crown were awarded a soft penalty on 67 minutes. Smith produced an excellent save from the initial spot kick, but the taker reacted quickest to convert the rebound.

The hosts then pulled another back with an excellent strike from around 25 yards that gave Smith little chance.

At 5–2, Club regained some control, although the closing stages weren't without incident. Ryan was shown a second yellow after reacting following an off-the-ball incident, reducing Club to ten men late on.

Despite that, Club saw out the remaining minutes and secured a thoroughly deserved 5–2 victory – our first league win. 👏

A huge effort from all 16 players involved, with everyone contributing to the result, including Dave Moore, who unselfishly remained on the bench rather than disrupt the team's rhythm.

⭐ PLAYER OF THE MATCH — LEIGHTON MYCROFT

There were several contenders, but two goals and two assists, combined with a relentless afternoon causing problems for the Rose & Crown defence, earns Leighton the award.

FIRST LEAGUE GAME IN THE BOOKS | CHESTERFIELD CLUB 2–5 BYRON TAP

History was made at Highfield Park as Chesterfield Club’s men’s team played their first-ever competitive league fixture in the Chesterfield & District Sunday League.

It wasn’t the result we wanted, but there were plenty of positives from a young Club side and plenty to learn as we begin our first season.

Byron started the stronger and took the lead from the penalty spot after eight minutes.

Club responded brilliantly. Toby Connolly picked out Connor Smith, whose superb control on the edge of the area set him up to calmly finish and score our first-ever league goal. ⚽

12’ | 1–1 – C. Smith (T. Connolly assist)

We grew into the half and created chances, forcing two excellent saves from the Byron keeper, including a superb stop to deny Muney. However, Byron struck again five minutes before the break.

HT | Chesterfield Club 1–2 Byron Tap

Byron came out strongly after the restart and their experience showed, extending the lead on 55 and 65 minutes.

Club kept battling, though, and fresh legs helped us regain some momentum. Muney was brought down inside the area and Connor Smith stepped up to confidently dispatch the resulting penalty for his second of the game.

69’ | 2–4 – C. Smith (pen) ⚽⚽

The game became much more evenly contested again, but Byron remained dangerous on the counter and added their fifth in the 83rd minute.

FT | Chesterfield Club 2–5 Byron Tap

A disappointing scoreline, but certainly no doom and gloom. This is a new, youthful team learning a new system and today was another important step forward.

Aaron had little chance with the goals, while Keelan Madin and Cam Harris worked tirelessly at full-back. The midfield trio of Toby Connolly, Alex Rust and Connor Smith showed promising signs of beginning to gel, with Connor Johnson making a positive impact after coming on.

Tay Hoole did a good job holding the ball up while playing as a makeshift striker, while Danny Arnold put in an industrious performance throughout and repeatedly brought the best out of the Byron goalkeeper.

⭐ PLAYER OF THE MATCH: Danny Arnold

And a little bit of club history for Connor Smith — our first-ever league goalscorer and the first Chesterfield Club player to score a league brace. ⚽⚽

A tough introduction, but the journey has officially begun.

FIRST TEAM FINISH PRE-SEASON WITH PLENTY TO BUILD ON

Sunday saw the First Team complete their pre-season schedule with a tough test against Green United, a side playing a couple of divisions above.

Club named a strong side, supplemented by a couple of trialists, and started brightly. We looked comfortable both in and out of possession and enjoyed the better of the opening stages.

Against the run of play, Green were handed an opportunity to take the lead when the referee awarded a penalty for handball. It was certainly a decision that left Club feeling hard done by, but the spot-kick was emphatically dispatched off the crossbar to give Green the advantage.

Club didn't let the setback change the way we were playing and continued to apply pressure, although Green began to grow into the contest as the half progressed. With just a minute remaining before the break, the visitors found a second.

HT: Chesterfield Club 0–2 Green United

Changes were made at half-time, but there was no drop in momentum. Club continued to work Green hard, particularly down the flanks, and finally got the reward the performance deserved on 62 minutes when Gift reacted inside the area to prod the ball home.

1–2. Game on.

Green responded by pushing forward themselves, but that created opportunities for Club on the break. On 68 minutes, an incisive run from Muney took him into the penalty area before he was brought down.

Muney picked himself up, took responsibility and calmly dispatched the resulting penalty to bring us level at 2–2.

The following spell was an evenly matched contest between two sides going for the win. Green eventually found the breakthrough on 81 minutes, some neat play around the edge of the box creating the opportunity to restore their lead.

Once again, Club responded.

We pushed for another equaliser and, after sustained pressure around the Green goal, the ball fell to Connor Smith on the edge of the area. He made no mistake, drilling his effort home on 88 minutes.

3–3.

Unfortunately, there was still time for late drama. Green were awarded a second penalty deep into the closing stages, another decision Club felt extremely hard done by. Before the spot-kick was taken, Ryan was shown a red card following a comment to the referee.

Green converted the penalty to make it 4–3, with barely enough time remaining for the restart.

FT: Chesterfield Club 3–4 Green United

The result doesn't tell the full story. Against opposition from a couple of divisions above, Club more than held their own and, for large periods, enjoyed the better of the play. More importantly, twice going behind by two goals and then fighting back to 2–2 and 3–3 showed plenty of character.

The only real concern from the afternoon was seeing Glenn Pearson forced off after around 20 minutes. He was withdrawn rather than taking any unnecessary risks.

Plenty of positives, three goals against strong opposition and another valuable 90 minutes to finish preparations.

Goals: Gift, Muney (pen), Connor Smith

A big thank you to Green United for a competitive final pre-season test.

Thank you as always to JW Garden Services, TheBoilerShop.co.uk and KBJA Photography for their continued support, and to MWM LTD for supplying our kits.

Pre-season complete. Next up: the season begins.
