PREVIEW| CHALLENGE AND OPPORTUNITY AT HOME FOR CHOBHAM

This weekend sees the end of the first gruelling block of six consecutive fixtures in Regional 2 South Central. Whilst it may not seem too much to ask of boys to play six games in a row, the reality is that Level 6 rugby is extremely competitive and demanding both physically and mentally for all involved. It is clear from team sheets across the league, perhaps other than for those clubs operating on a different resourcing model, that clubs are somewhat crawling into this last fixture before the break week. A welcome opportunity to rest weary bodies and recharge the minds awaits after this weekend's round of games.

Chobham's opponents this week are Old Tiffs who currently sit 6th in the table but with only one less win than Chobham. Their only losses have come against strong opposition in league leaders Wimborne and powerful Wi******er. Last season saw a Chobham squad at the height of its injury crisis soundly beaten away from home but in the reverse fixture come out on top 70-50 in surely one of the games of the season in any league! Old Tiffs are a club and side we have a lot of time for as they operate in a modest, grass roots fashion with a tight group of boys who are hugely committed to their teammates and their Club. On the field they are hugely combative but also a joy to watch, with some of their expansive rugby intoxicating at times. Chobham know that anything other than a fully committed and focused performance could lead to defeat.

Spirits are however high, with a league position of 3rd and a record of four bonus point wins from five games (four of which away) providing a sense of momentum and confidence, especially as the squad has never quite been at full strength and has never quite put together a complete performance. Scoring over 40 points and conceding so few points last time out against local rivals Guildford was certainly pleasing, given the atrocious conditions. This week's lineup sees a few more changes. Sam Davies edges ever closer to the 100-cap mark and starts at full back. Connor Smallbone is now a fixture on the wing and is joined by try scoring machine Rhys Tulk, back to full fitness after coming off the bench last week. Rob Voller and Olly Mantell are again in the centres, quietly building a very slick and robust partnership. At half back, skipper Guy Mawhood is at 9 and is partnered by Alex Seers, back after a long-term injury. To have a player with recent national league playing experience back in the fold at his boyhood club is a great story as well as a massive boost for the squad. Up front Dan Benton continues his one-man demolition derby at 8 and is joined in the back row by the ever reliable, energetic and abrasive duo of Harrison Jones and Lewis Bantleman. South African hard man Jared Rodgers returns from sickness to partner the engine room mainstay Jonny Boylett in the second row. The front row is again composed of the brutal trio of McCain, Bellion-Carey and Hargan. On the bench, new signing Ollie Parsons retains his spot after a promising debut last week, Chris Love-Baker offers serious wattage and Will Thompson is back in the mix looking to provide the silkiest of services at the base...

Head Coach Robbie Kennard commented, "A superb win for the 1st last time out in terrible conditions away at Guildford. It was a really mature and professional performance. Scoring 42 points in those conditions was impressive and, to be honest, it could have been more. We really controlled the game and got a deserved 5 points. The Cannons had another tough game with some good individual performances. This 6-week block has been gruelling and attritional for all clubs, and we are really proud of where we sit in the table. The final game of the block brings our friends Old Tiffinians to Fowlers Wells. Last year, the game was an absolute corker of attacking rugby, and I’m sure both teams will play with the same intent. We have been forced into a few changes with knocks and injuries, but we are in a good space and look forward to a great afternoon of rugby."

No game for the Cannons this week so all eyes are on Fowlers Wells. Forecast is delightful so all support welcome

Get in touch if you fancy learning more about the opportunity or know someone who should.

REPORT | CHOBHAM WEATHER THE STORM IN DREICH DERBY

‘Dreich’, a Scottish adjective (rhymes with ‘loch’, apparently), pithily describes dull, wet, overcast, and miserable weather. As onomatopoetical words go, it aptly sums up the conditions for Chobham’s blessedly short trip to local rivals Guildford in the RFU’s Regional 2 South Central League on Saturday. Chobham, sporting their strongest XV of the season so far, travelled with a buzz of confidence having beaten Bognor with a fine performance the previous week and claimed three from four wins for the season. Conversely, some of Guildford’s toughest fixtures have been front-loaded this season and they were winless going into the fixture. The pitiless weather though had no respect for either team as waves of Boelo-borne rain drove horizontally across the pitch, chilling the marrow and soaking the soul.

Chobham’s front row – Pete McCain, Sean Bellion-Carey, and Gus Hargan - are unlikely to win many beauty pageants, but to the Chobham cognoscenti (the ‘Chobnoscenti’) they have been handsomely impressive throughout this season. Ably abetted by Jonny Boylett and Tom Halsey in the engine room, they understood from the start that this was to be a day for grim visaged grunt and, despite an early penalty score for Guildford, soon started to turn the screw. On 12 minutes, a powerful scrum deep in Guildford territory created excellent front-foot ball. Defying the conditions, the ball was transferred neatly left where the immaculately well-coached winger, Liam Androne, was on hand to slide over the line. A brilliant kick conversion by Sam Davies took Chobham into a 7-3 lead.

Just four minutes later, full-back Danny Watson picked out McCain with an exquisite pass some 30 metres out from the Guildford try line. Running onto the ball at pace, McCain split the defence and swerved (repeat, swerved!) the full-back to crash over under the posts. Chobham moved into an eleven-point lead. The Fowlers Wells boys now started to dominate both scrum and line-out, with Gallic Goliath, Sam Goddard, and big Dan Benton in dominant form. As the first quarter passed, Davies once again found touch with a huge raking kick deep into the Guildford 22. A Guildford knock-on at the ensuing line out resulted in a five-metre scrum from which it was almost inevitable that scrum-half Guy Mawhood would score. Chobham moved 18 points clear and the hunt for a bonus point was on.

Benton’s dander was now up and throughout the game he made some huge tackles, two in particular performing rib rearrangements on the unfortunate victims (God gave us a spare kidney for precisely this eventuality). On 34 minutes, Chobham again found themselves with a line-out close to the Guildford line. Bellion-Carey emerged with the ball from the resultant drive over the line, taking Chobham into a 28-3 lead. To their credit, Guildford came back hard at Chobham. McCain, a creature of habit, received a yellow card on the stroke of half-time for some defensive shenanigans and Guildford drove over the line from the resultant tap penalty. In the conditions though, Chobham were satisfied with the 20-point lead.

The second half started without the influential Davies, retired hurt. Watson stepped up to fly-half, Androne moved into full-back, and Rhys Tulk made a welcome return on the left wing. Five minutes into the half, big Rob Voller (ably partnered in midfield by Olly Mantell) drove deep into the heart of the Guildford midfield. The resultant quick ball allowed Watson to embark on one of his now trademark right to left arcing breaks, steaming over the line and converting his own try to take Chobham to a 35-8 lead. Guildford though were not broken, the impressive back row of Cornelius, Erasmus, and Goodwin kept charging forward and rarely took a backward step. On 50 minutes, an odd passage of fly-hacking resulted in a Guildford try to take them to 15 points.

The conditions did not let up and, as your correspondent’s notes turned to papier mache and the ball to soap, the match resolved into a battle for territory. As ever, Harrison Jones piled into the rucks and carried with conviction, consistently taking Chobham beyond the gain line, whilst the insoluble Connor Smallbone, forlornly facing the brunt of the conditions wide out on the right, defended strongly. With a quarter of the match to go, some excellent game management again took Chobham deep into the Guildford 22 where their saturated eight obliterated the Guildford scrum, giving the arch-recidivist McCain the opportunity to power over from close quarters. With the score on 42-15, the last quarter dissolved (literally) into a battle with the elements. The impeccably well-coached and versatile Boylett moved up to tight-head as Hargan retired water-logged, and the always game Lewis Bantleman and new boy Ollie Parsons (who bears a strong resemblance to a barrel on legs), came on to battle hypothermia and ensure Chobham finished well clear.

Four wins from five and the force is with Chobham. Next week features a home fixture against Old Tiffinians, a match which last year produced 120 points. If the tempest abates, it’s likely to be a highly entertaining afternoon at Fowlers Wells, one well worth swapping from a trip to Aldi (apologies, Waitrose).

RESULTS ROUND UP

Mixed fortunes this weekend for the men.

The 1s took another good bonus point win on the road in atrocious conditions in Guildford which takes them up to 3rd in the table.

The Cannons took the walkover win against KCS to remain 4th in the table and a depleted side took on a challenge against a very strong Chiswick side from a couple of levels above.
