It’s not about who is the best, it’s about who plays the best

That’s an important distinction to make and why cultivating a performance environment on your terms is essential

The goal is to put you in the best possible position to play as well as you can

Not just for a singular event but day to day week to week

That’s why I put together the How to perform your best at competition Ebook

And all it will cost you is your email!

Link is in my bio for access

If your in the sport for long enough you will go through periods of not feeling like your getting any better

It’s a completely natural thing

But the big question I would ask in those moments is

“What are you trying to get better at?”

Because unfortunately “jiu jitsu” isn’t a good answer

I know it’s boring and you want to just turn up and roll but it’s so important

Effort can’t be the only currency

It’s important don’t get me wrong, but just showing up will only get you so far

I should start this by apologising for the dog hair

I’ll be honest, where work clothes are concerned it’s a battle I gave up on long ago

But anyway to the topic at hand

I don’t do nutrition for people, ofc we can have a chat and I’ll happily give some direction where it’s needed

But in terms of telling you what to eat, managing your weight etc, that ain’t a problem I solve

And there’s many reasons for this as disclosed in the video and many more I could go in to that weren’t included

It’s not that I don’t think it’s important

It’s just that I think there are people out there who are very good at it

I have no interest in being a jack of all trades

My mission is very simple, make you an absolute nightmare to deal with on the mats

A physical force to be reckoned with

Psychologically impregnable

Tactically and technically efficient

A tier one performer

And yes performance plays a supporting role in that but we just leave it to the guys who are best at it

When you get hurt (and you will just wait)

And have done nothing to try and prevent it from happening

You have absolutely no room to complain

No “oh what am I going to do without training, it looks after my mental health”

“Oh I’m going to gain weight”

“Everyone else is getting better around me”

It can’t be that important to you, because if it was you would do a lot more to make sure it didn’t happen

In some ways I respect it, because I don’t have the bo****ks to risk it

I’ve been through an ACL repair, and sat having to wait 6 months for a meniscus surgery and I can tell you for certainty it’s s**t

If I told you that as a coach I’ve had conversations with members of our gym where we are going to activity seek out matches where there’s a good chance they won’t win

In the same way I’ve had conversations where the single job of another individual is to expose themselves to as many different rulesets, opponents, events as they physically can

The difference is each decision serves a purpose for that individual, it’s not competing for competing sake

“Might just jump on here” no

How does that decision help you in the long run?

There’s always context

You can’t treat them all same because they aren’t the same

And the only way to get better at them is to understand the purpose they serve for you

You know what I’ve always found weird, how grapplers are obsessed with training their hands, but never do anything about their feet 🤔

There are very few angles outside of injury and abit of fun I can see the majority of people emphasising direct grip training over normal strength training when it comes improving performance on the mats

If you can deadlift 2.5 times your body weight, row 50% of your bodyweight for reps, hammer curl 20kg+ for reps

Then we can delve into the nuance of specific grip exercises for grappling

But until that point your probably majoring in the minors

Your grip will improve as a by product of holding on to things in the process of getting stronger
