Hear from families affected by drowning as to why water safety education is essential: For Joe and Sunnah

Enjoy the water, but be safe

It starts as a joke…
Then suddenly, it’s serious.
Cold water. Hidden dangers. No second chances.
If it feels off — it is.
Say something. Stop it. Be a mate

There are 8 key safety points in this picture, can you match the 8 points below with the correct place in the picture?

1 - Dont go into the water to get lost toys or play with wild animals, always follow the water safety code.

2 - Litter or discarded items hidden underwater can hurt or trap you.

3 - Beware of litter and slippery surfaces such wet stones or puddles.

4 - Wear a lifejacket when on the water to help if you fall in.

5 - Safety signs give information to keep you safe, always abide by them.

6 - Stay within arms reach of an adult when you are in, on or around water

7 - Rescue equipment may be missing or broken

8 - Water could be polluted, we don't want to encourage any entering of the water unless it is a clearly lifeguarded lido.

This week is drowning prevention week, as the weather warms up once again, it can be tempting to cool off in water, but do you know how to stay safe?

The Royal Life Saving Society UK - RLSS UK have created this simple walk through water safety code, just a few quick and easy points to remember to ensure everyone stays safe.

If you would like your child to start learning to swim or to improve their existing skills we have places available in our Learn to Swim program.

Similarly we also have places on our Rookie Lifeguard program where you can learn not only how to enjoy water safely but also critical water rescue skills.

This past Saturday some of our swimmers in Stages 6, 7 and our Rookie Lifeguards took part in a distance challenge.

How far could they swim in 45 minutes.

It was an amazing effort from them all and we have some shout outs to give:

Emmett and Fionn from Rookie Lifeguard group - 1000m they did 48 lengths

Patrick, William, Ben and Albie from st 7/ Bronze group all achieved 1000m-they did 40-44 lengths

Cosima from stage 7/Bronze group and Rylee from stage 6 group achieved 1000m badge and did 40 lengths

Lydia from stage 7/Bronze group and William H from stage 7 both achieved 600m badges and did 26 lengths

A fantastic effort, not just to swim but the level of fitness shown throughout, well done to everyone.

Cold water shock can affect anyone - even strong swimmers, even on hot days.

• Warm weather doesn't mean warm water - open water stays dangerously cold.
• Cold water shock causes an involuntary gasp and loss of breathing control within seconds - even for strong swimmers.
• Even confident swimmers can quickly lose strength, control, and coordination. Panic makes it worse.

It doesn't take long for things to go wrong in open water - even for strong swimmers.
