Are you actually trying to develop the correct qualities ?

If your a fighter this might help you understand the role of strength & conditioning.

What is VO2 max, and why should combat athletes care? 🥊

VO2 max = the maximal rate your body can uptake and use oxygen (ml/kg/min). It’s a direct marker of how efficient your delivery system is — heart, lungs, blood, muscles — at getting oxygen to working tissue.

In short: it’s the ceiling on your aerobic engine.

Swipe to see why this matters for fighters →

Why test VO2 max for combat sports?

Your aerobic system isn’t just “cardio” — it’s the system that:
→ Speeds recovery between rounds
→ Maintains output when things get ugly
→ Lets you surge in the championship rounds
→ Determines how much workload you can tolerate through fight camp

A bigger engine = more capacity to train hard, recover fast, and still have something left when it counts.

How we test VO2 max ?

A graded treadmill protocol — starting at around 6 km/h, with speed increasing by 1 km/h every minute until the athlete reaches exhaustion.

(Protocols can vary.)

Throughout the test, a metabolic mask analyses every breath, measuring oxygen uptake and carbon dioxide production.

As the intensity increases, this allows us to directly measure how effectively the body takes in and uses oxygen during exercise, ultimately determining the athlete’s VO₂ max and aerobic capacity

No guessing. Just data.

A VO2 max number is only useful if you do something with it.

Low relative to expected for your weight class/sport? That tells us where the gap is — and points training toward closing it:
→ High intensity Aerobic interval work
→ Longer, lower-intensity aerobic sessions
→ Targeted volume to build the base before we layer in intensity

We test to guide the plan — not just to hand you a score.

VO₂ max only tells part of the story.

It measures how much oxygen your body can take in, transport and use — but it doesn’t capture everything that limits performance.

During repeated high-intensity efforts, H⁺ and inorganic phosphate accumulate within the muscle, contributing to fatigue and a loss of force and power.

That’s why two athletes with similar VO₂ max scores can perform very differently.

One may need more aerobic development. Another may need greate

💥 Power isn’t in your arms. It’s in the ground, the hips, and the sequence. Build it. Convert it. Express it.

Example of how the application of exercises can be ineffective for the stimulus your tying to get.

If this was solely used for conditioning then perhaps it could be slightly more useful however I’d still question it slightly.
