🎬 Why write create our own scenes?
From time to time it makes for a very useful exercise..
This week at Truth In Action, students stepped behind the page and created their own scenes.
As actors, it's easy to focus solely on performance, but writing gives us a deeper understanding of story, character, subtext, stakes, and emotional shifts. By creating our own material from time to time, we begin to see how scenes are built from the inside out.
This exercise isn't about becoming screenwriters. It's about strengthening our instincts as actors, developing creativity, and learning how to recognise the moments that make scenes compelling and truthful.
We explored:
• Character relationships and dynamics
• Gear shifts and emotional turns
• Stakes and objectives
• Subtext and intention
• Story structure and scene progression
• Using imagination to create authentic situations
The more we understand how a scene is constructed, the more freedom and confidence we have when bringing it to life.
It was a useful exercise and the students enjoyed the challenge.
Their efforts were outstanding ✨️

⭐️ STUDENT SPOTLIGHT – AMELIA WATSON ⭐️
Doncaster / Manchester-based actor and emerging screen performer
Amelia Watson is an 18-year-old actor currently completing her A Levels while building experience across both stage and screen performance.
Having performed since early childhood, Amelia has developed through school productions with roles including Frenchy in Grease, The Wicked Witch of the West in The Wizard of Oz, and Anna in Frozen.
Alongside acting, Amelia has extensive DJ experience, strengthening her confidence performing in front of live audiences and developing her ability to connect authentically under pressure. She has also received an offer to study BA (Hons) Acting for Stage, Screen and Digital Media at Performers College in Manchester, taking the next step towards a professional acting career.
⭐️ Why screen acting?
I’m drawn to the naturalism of screen performance — the honesty, subtlety and ability to work within real-life settings. I enjoy exploring truth in quieter moments and developing performances that feel grounded and authentic.
⭐️ Biggest shift since attending sessions with screen acting coach Sam Roccia
Building confidence beyond my comfort zone and becoming more natural in my work. Coming from a stronger musical theatre background, I’ve learned to slow down, explore the depth behind text, and understand how meaning can be processed and expressed in different ways on screen. Working alongside performers of different ages and experiences has also broadened my confidence and adaptability.
⭐️ Current focus
Developing a strong foundation in screen acting while preparing for drama school and future professional opportunities. Amelia is focused on gaining practical experience, refining technique, and continuing to build confidence in front of the camera.
⭐️ Looking ahead
Amelia hopes to build a career spanning both stage and screen, collaborating with creatives who are passionate, driven and committed to meaningful storytelling. Her long-term goal is to continue growing as a versatile performer while contributing to projects that inspire and connect with audiences.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
A committed, thoughtful young performer with a clear willingness to learn and push beyond familiar territory.
Amelia brings enthusiasm, openness and determination to her work — qualities already supporting her transition into more grounded, naturalistic screen performance.
Truth in Action are excited to see where this next chapter takes Amelia. ✨️
