Moray made the trip to Stonehaven last Saturday to play Mackie in round 1 of the National Shield and after a hard fought encounter progressed to the next round following a 49 points to 29 win.

In the 5th minute, the Elgin side took the lead. A strong run by No 8 Lewis Scott saw him break the initial line of defence before being stopped. Second-row Alex Matthews was on hand to pick up an drive forward before offloading to prop Mark Taylor who made the line for the score. Full-back and captain Rory Millar converted for 0-7.

Four minutes later Mackie replied with an unconverted try out wide for 5-7.

Moray returned to the offensive but in the 16th minute, the home side turned over ball near their goal-line. A clearance kick took a fortuitous high bounce back into the arms of their wing who ran in a converted try for a 12-7 lead.

The visitors stepped up the pressure but could not break down the Stonehaven side’s defence but in the 31st minute they did score. After several phases of play in the 22, centre Connor McWilliam deft chipped towards the corner. Millar followed up, rose above the defence, secured the ball and ran in the try. He converted his own try to regain the lead at 12-14.

Five minutes later, Moray were back in the 22 with rucking phases. Quick ball was moved to ho**er Neil Alexander who dummied the defender and made the line. Millar added the extras for 12-21, the half-time score.

The Elgin side started the second half well but it was the home side who scored first when their No 10 broke the defensive line and scored a converted try for 19-21.

A few minutes later, a penalty in the 22 saw McWilliam take a quick tap and have the strength to break through and score. Millar added the extras for 19-28.

In a 3 minute spell in the middle of the half, two similar line breaks resulted in Mackie scoring 2 unconverted tries to regain the lead at 29-28.

Moray regrouped and stepped up the pressure on the home side resulting in 3 tries being scored in the final 12 minutes of the game.

Firstly, after a number of phases in the 22, McWilliam prodded the ball past the rushing defence and fellow centre Lewis Small was first to the ball, picked up and made the line.

Secondly, and again after several drives at the line, Scott picked up and burst through to score.

Finally, with the home side trying to run from their 22, wing Mark Newman intercepted the pass and run in his first try as a senior at the club.

Millar added all 3 conversions for a final score of Mackie 29 - Moray 49.

It was a good first competitive outing for the Moray side and although there was some signs of rustiness, they showed great character and determination to grind out the win.

This Saturday, the Arnold Clark Caledonia League Division 1 starts and Moray make the short journey to play Kinloss Eagles at 3pm. This is sure to be a good competitive local derby.
