Let’s set the scene… it’s 2007. I’ve finally made the jump from my GT Chucker hardtail to my dream full-suspension setup: a Kona Stinky. My Dad had the frame powder coated and I’d waited all year to get a white Halo SAS rear wheel for Christmas. I’d spend hours filling checkout baskets on Chain Reaction Cycles just for fun. I’d get home from school, I’d ride BMX, then spend the evenings watching Sam Hill’s race runs and Ride BMX DVD’s. On the weekends we were digging or catching trains to ride dirt jumps, downhill, or the local north shore. It was a dream.

Nike 6.0’s were my favourite shoes (bring them back!). I loved my DMR V8 pedals, so much that I’d swap the same set between all my bikes. My 150mm Marzocchi Bombers felt massive and they originally lived on my GT Chucker, which made it look like a chopper. Did I care? Nope. Did I send it? Hell yeah.

A few years after I left school, I retrained as a welder and metal fabricator. Once I found my feet, I realised making things with metals was what I always needed to do. Five years later I moved into motorsport, which eventually led me to HEL.

While working on the motorsport side, we started getting requests for a MTB brakes. It was my calling. Me and the team dedicated everything we had to make the HEL Advocate, something that 2007 kid would never believe.

HEL Mountain Bike officially turned one in June. We wanted to celebrate with an event or party but just we’ve been pushed for time.

We fully live and breathe what we do. We’re a very small team in a tough industry. Manufacturing costs are forever increasing. We’re honest, authentic and always transparent. We can’t offer cheap products or price-match brands manufacturing overseas because making everything in-house costs us a lot more but that’s exactly why it matters. 24/7 our team is machining moto, auto and mountain bike products under one roof.

I’m incredibly proud of what we’ve achieved in our first year. We’ll keep innovating. We’ll keep disrupting. And we’ll keep doing things our own way.
