We ask players all the time: do you actually read your contract?

Nine times out of ten, no. They just check the wages.

But the agent fee, the accommodation, the medical insurance, all of it's taxable, and it catches people out at year end if nobody's flagged it first.

Speak to someone before you sign, not after the P11D lands.

Your club sorts your tax position for you.

False. Though it's one of the most common things players believe.

HMRC tell the club what tax code to apply, and the club pays that over. That's it. We've seen clubs where accommodation was supposed to be tax free by agreement, but the accountant handling it didn't know that agreement existed. Players ended up with backdated tax bills for staying in their own club's accommodation.

That's the risk of not having your own independent advice.

You can spread your tax bill across the year with a payment plan instead of paying it all in January.

True - But should you?

HMRC charge interest on payment plans. If you can afford to pay it in one go, why would you choose to pay more for the privilege? It also masks a bigger problem, if your tax code's wrong on top of a payment plan, you end up chasing your tail between a direct debit and a corrected bill.

The better position is knowing your tax liability in advance, not managing it after the fact.

You've heard of a National Insurance number. Have you heard of a UTR?

It's the ten-digit number HMRC gives you when you register for Self Assessment, and you can't file without it. First time registering? It can take 4 to 6 weeks, though we chase HMRC to speed that up. Already registered before? We can usually get you set up on our system in about a week.

Get ahead of it now and it's one less thing to think about in January.

Would you actually know if you needed to register for Self Assessment?

It's not just the obvious stuff. Property income, sponsorship, coaching on the side - if it's under Β£1,000 total you're covered by the trading allowance. Above that, you need to register.

Interest income catches people out too, the threshold depends on what rate of tax you're on, and if you're earning over Β£50k and paying into a workplace pension, there could be extra relief sitting there nobody's claimed.

Even your own boots count. Spend Β£1,000 on kit as an additional rate taxpayer and that's a genuine Β£450 back.

If you're not sure whether any of this applies, that's worth a conversation.
