Liverpool got off to a winning start in their first Player's Cup match this season, but WSL2 side Sunderland did cause the reds from the WSL some trouble. Liverpool made 9 changes to their starting line up from the loss to Manchester City on Friday night, including Marie Hobinger starting as skipper.
Liverpool started strongly, forcing three corners in the first six minutes. Beata Olsson came closest to the first goal when put through on goal by 16 year old Maizie Trueman making her debut for the reds, but Olsson's effort was blocked by Sunderland keeper Noa Schumacher, who again was saving soon after from Aurelie Csillag!
Liverpool's dominance paid off after 20 minutes when Zara Shaw pounced on the loose ball in the box after Sunderland failed to clear a Lily Woodham corner.
But as half-time loomed, the WSL2 side turned the game on it's head scoring two in two minutes, Chloe Paxton headed in from a corner and Ella Parker fired home after a knock down from a long ball.
With work to do in the second half, it didn't take the reds long to equalise, after 47 minutes, skipper Marie Höbinger after pressing the away defence into a mistake at the back.
Natalia Ramos then gave the reds the lead with a fine solo effort, weaving her way into the box and finding the bottom corner.
Marie Höbinger would then grab her second on the night to make three goals scored in just ten minutes of the second half following good work from Beata Olsson.
MY VIEW:
Well, what probably should hhave been a routine victory for us turned out to be a bit of a struggle.
But, that said, we showed our determination and fought our way back in to the match to give us the victory!
It's job done for me, and despite Sunderland scoring twice, it was their only shots on target. Meanwhile, at the other end we showed some dominant attacking prowess, maybe being slightly critical, we should have and could have scored more, overall we deserved our victory!
Well played ladies 👏🏻💪🏻🔴
