On Thursdays, we have a session that’s a little bit different.

Four players gather for a match, across different generations, to enjoy a game that acts as their common ground.

This is what tennis can do.

For children like Sabein, on the performance tennis route, they don’t often prioritise having fun on court and being able to play with friends. That is what makes this session so special for her and for everyone involved.

Statistics show that young girls often drop out of sports in their droves during their teen years because it becomes too pressurised and serious, which is why it is so crucial to keep the sport fun and engaging.

That’s what we try to create at G Tennis. A fun and inclusive environment in the sport of tennis.

Last week coach Chris, the founder of Young Champs, was at the England Community Centre in Raynes Park delivering his ‘Changing the Game’ course. The day was about one thing: delivering high-quality tennis in non-traditional settings and more importantly, how we keep children engaged long-term.

As Chris prepares to deliver this course for the Level 5 Master Coach cohort at the National Tennis Centre this afternoon, he keeps coming back to one specific question:

What does “success” actually look like for “tennis opened up”?

The LTA’s vision of “tennis opened up” is one we can all get behind, but as we move forward, we have to look closely at the reality. While apps have successfully reduced ‘gatekeeping’ by making courts easier to find, data suggests that for families facing data poverty or lower digital confidence, a ‘digital-first’ approach can act as a barrier

“Changing the Game” is about ensuring that any child who picks up a racket today has the opportunity to progress and keep playing for years to come. At G Tennis & Young Champs, we have proven this is possible, keeping children from lower socio-economic groups thriving in the sport for over 8 years.

The question now is: Can we scale this approach to clubs and venues across the country?

Say hi to Chris, the co-founder of G Tennis. Chris talks us through the origins of G Tennis, what the business focuses on, and why it’s so important to engage with the local community and open up tennis for everyone.

10 years ago I started coaching (tennis) Leo & yesterday he turned 18! He told me it makes him feel old 😭

A massive thank you to Sha and the guys for generously donating the courts and rackets, it was a real treat.

G tennis and our charity have a fairly unique business model (to tennis) where approximately 25% of our junior programme is £2 per class or free. This means children from all of the local community can access coaching and join in our groups.

Some of these teens that we support have consequently been playing for over 5 years and have now started on their journey to become coaches.

Come and find us on the courts in Vauxhall, Clapham & Larkhall Park 🎾
