🥋. DAEDO, KPNP, OR WAY CHAMP?
Currently, there are three different electronic scoring systems used in high-level competitions, including DAEDO, KPNP, and WAY CHAMP. Although they all share the same objective—detecting and electronically recording points—each system has different characteristics, sensors, and responses.
* DAEDO
This is one of the most internationally recognized systems. Its technology uses sensors in the chest protector and the athlete’s protective gear to detect impacts and determine when the necessary level for scoring a point is reached.
* KPNP
This is also a system used in international competitions that seems to be the preferred choice in the UK going forward. Its operation and sensitivity may feel different from DAEDO, so an athlete accustomed to only one system may need an adjustment period when switching to another.
* WAY CHAMP
This is a more recent technology that has begun to gain traction in competitive Taekwondo. Like the previous systems, it uses electronic technology to record impacts, but its response and combat experience may feel different to the athlete. And here’s the truly important point:
THE ATHLETE DOESN’T COMPETE AGAINST THE CHEST PROTECTOR... BUT THEY HAVE TO
KNOW HOW TO COMPETE WITH IT.
A kick that used to be effective might need greater
precision.
A distance that worked might change.
The speed of contact might feel different.
The strategy for scoring points might need adjustments.
They need to know how to adapt.
They need to be familiar with different technologies.
They need to understand how their fighting style changes depending on the system.
They need to develop different ways to score points.
And, above all, when they arrive at a competition, there should be no room for that classic excuse:
“But I’ve never competed with that type of chest protector before.”
Because the competition isn’t always going to adapt to the athlete. THE ATHLETE MUST LEARN TO ADAPT TO THE COMPETITION.
